Arne Slot continues to feel the pressure at Liverpool following another dreadful defeat

Talks of Liverpool defending their Premier League title after their five opening Premier League wins now seem like a distant memory. The Reds’ season has taken a hideous nosedive and the main talking point is now focused on whether Arne Slot will keep his job or not.

Liverpool have now lost nine of their last 12 games in all competitions - their worst run of results in more than 70 years. Their latest 4-1 humiliation at the hands of PSV has thrown up major concerns and reports are now suggesting the club is considering replacements for Slot.

“It is a shock for everyone, for the players, for me, this is very, very unexpected. I am feeling safe, I am okay though,” the manager admitted after their latest Champions League defeat.

Liverpool ‘admire’ Ange Postecoglou as potential Arne Slot replacement

Despite Slot’s comments, reports continue to suggest who is on Liverpool’s radar, should the Premier League champions pull the trigger on the Dutchman in the coming weeks.

According to TEAMtalk, former Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest boss Ange Postecoglou is someone the Liverpool board ‘admire massively’, and who would ‘suit the club’.

A source close to the outlet said Slot is definitely ‘under pressure’ right now, but the situation is ‘not as black and white as some say’.

“He can’t keep losing, that’s obvious. Three or four more bad results and the conversation changes completely. But there is more leeway than people outside think.

“We don’t sack managers easily at Liverpool. The owners hate knee-jerk decisions and FSG still see this as year zero of a multi-year project.”

Why Liverpool must not replace Arne Slot with Ange Postecoglou

Postecoglou’s success managing in Australia and Scotland would make him an interesting target for most clubs. He has won 14 trophies as manager of senior sides over the years, but his most recent record has shown he is not the right fit for Liverpool.

The Reds are in desperate need of an immediate turnaround. Their Premier League title hopes have disappeared but challenging for a top four finish is not out of the question. Results need to happen now, though. Liverpool are in a state of emergency and any more losses could do irreversible harm to their potential season outcome.

Postecoglou deserves his praise for guiding Tottenham to the Europa League title back in May. However, despite this historic milestone, it could not convince the club he was the right man for the job long-term, and they sacked him two weeks after their trophy parade.

In the same season Spurs became European champions, they recorded their worst-ever Premier League finish. Tottenham’s dismal league season ended in them finishing one spot above the relegation zone, with 22 defeats on the board and just 11 wins.

The wild contrast between their Premier League and Europa League campaigns was impossible to ignore. He had guided them to fifth the season prior but plummeted to a 17th-place finish a year later.

Postecoglou was then hired by Nottingham Forest to salvage a poor start the 2025/26 season. After less than a month into his tenure, he found himself in the media linked with sack rumours. Sure enough, the 60-year-old was axed after a winless start to the season with Forest saw them drop into the relegation zone in October.

After eight games, Postecoglou was shown the door, making him the shortest-serving Forest manager in history and second-shortest in the Premier League, with just 39 days under his belt.

Postecoglou was brought in to replace Nuno Espirito Santo, who had lost his opening three games this season. The instruction would have been simple - stop Nottingham Forest slipping back into a relegation battle. Little that was seen of Postecoglou in the East Midlands suggested he was capable of doing that.

Like Forest, Liverpool will have one clear instruction if they sack Slot - avoid an absolute catastrophe of a season. Having guided Spurs to their worst ever finish and then contributed to Forest’s relegation fears, Postecoglou’s Premier League pedigree is not exactly ticking the boxes Liverpool will be looking for in a potential new manager.

Not taking away from the Athens-born manager’s record elsewhere - including his five trophies in two years with Celtic - but he’s yet to consistently show he can perform well in the Premier League, and that’s simply not a risk Liverpool can take when they are already struggling.
