Every hat-trick scored at Emirates Stadium

Ebere Eze’s hat-trick against Tottenham last weekend was only the 18th time the matchball has been claimed at Emirates Stadium, in what was the 529th match at the venue.

The first was scored by Emmanuel Adebayor in a 5-0 win over Derby County in September 2007, the start of the second season at the stadium. Though Jay Simpson had earlier scored a hat-trick for our under-18s in an FA Youth Cup game. Since then we have scored 11 Premier League hat-tricks, three in the Champions League, three in the League Cup and one in the FA Cup.

We have never conceded a hat-trick at the stadium. Here’s a look at all 17 we had scored before Ebs’ north London derby masterclass.

Emmanuel Adebayor v Derby CountySeptember 22, 2007Premier League

The first hat-trick at Emirates came in the 33rd game, and was scored by striker Emmanuel Adebayor. After Abou Diaby had given as the lead with a long-range rocket, Adebayor latched onto a throughball and rounded the keeper for his first. His second came from the penalty spot five minutes after the restart and once Cesc Fabregas had made it 4-0, our Togolese frontman completed the hat-trick after chesting down Denilson’s long pass and holding off his marker. Later in the season Adebayor scored a hat-trick away to Derby in the return fixture, becoming the first player in Premier League history to claim trebles home and away against the same opposition in the same season.

Carlos Vela v Sheffield UnitedSeptember 23, 2008League Cup

Mexican forward Carlos Vela was only 19 when he scored three against Sheffield United in September 2008. We were already 2-0 up when Nicklas Bendtner sent him through on goal just before half-time and he finished well inside the far post with his left foot. It was his first goal for the club, and his second came five minutes into the second-half. It was the pick of the bunch – a moment of cheeky improvisation when one-on-one with the keeper. He deftly chipped the ball over Paddy Kenny inside the area, leaving the keeper flummoxed. He blasted home his third late on from Aaron Ramsey’s pass to complete a 6-0 win.

Nicklas Bendtner v FC PortoMarch 9, 2010Champions League

Our first European hat-trick at Emirates Stadium was scored by Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner, and helped us overcome a 2-1 deficit from the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 tie. Bendtner stabbed home a loose ball on just nine minutes to open the scoring and then made it 2-0 on 25 minutes, finishing from close range after Andrey Arshavin’s nifty footwork. Bendtner’s hat-trick – and our 5-0 win – was wrapped up with a last-minute penalty.

Theo Walcott v BlackpoolAugust 21, 2010Premier League

Our first home game of 2010/11 finished 6-0 against Blackpool, thanks in no small part to 21-year-old Theo Walcott’s first Gunners hat-trick. He netted the first on 12 minutes with a crisp finish into the bottom corner before Jack Wilshere set him up for the second, when he turned inside the area before drilling low into the net. Walcott completed his hat-trick before an hour had been played, dancing past the defence before finding the bottom corner with his left foot. It was his first Gunners hat-trick, but the second of his career, having already become the youngest hat-trick scorer for England, with his three goals against Croatia.

Robin van Persie v Wigan AthleticJanuary 22, 2011Premier League

Later that season, Robin van Persie scored all three goals in our 3-0 home win over Wigan Athletic. And the Dutchman could have had even more – he also blazed over a penalty and hit the post as he dominated proceedings to claim his first Premier League matchball. His first came on 21 minutes, a left footed drive inside the area from Alex Song’s throughball. He crashed home the second on the hour mark when he volleyed in Cesc Fabregas’s lofted pass, and scored with his right foot at the near post five minutes from time to round off a fine afternoon’s work.

Nicklas Bendtner v Leyton OrientMarch 2, 2011FA Cup

Our third Emirates hat-trick of 2010/11 remains the only one scored in the FA Cup, as Nicklas Bendtner became the first man to score two hat-tricks at the stadium. After a 1-1 draw at Brisbane Road in the fifth round, we came out firing in the replay. Marouane Chamakh gave us an early lead, before Bendtner headed in Kieran Gibbs’s cross to double the lead. Just before half-time the big Dane found the bottom corner from just outside the area. He scored a penalty just after the hour after Gibbs was fouled, and we went on to triumph 5-0, just a few days after we’d lost in the final of the Carling Cup to Birmingham City.

Robin van Persie v Blackburn RoversFebruary 4, 2012Premier League

A game famous for being Thierry Henry’s last ever appearance at Emirates Stadium turned into the Robin van Persie show as he scored three in a 7-1 win. He tapped in the opener on two minutes from close range following Theo Walcott’s cross, and the same two combined for a very similar goal 35 minutes later. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored twice and Mikel Arteta was also on target as we made it 5-1 after 54 minutes. Van Persie was involved in two of those goals too, before he completed his treble on the hour. It was a smartly-taken finish with his right foot at the near post. Henry celebrated a goal in the last minute, but it was later judged to be a Scott Dann own goal.

Theo Walcott v Newcastle UnitedDecember 29, 2012Premier League

Another thumping win, this time Newcastle were beaten 7-3, and Theo Walcott crowned the evening with his hat-trick goal in the last minute. He took a quick free-kick nearly the corner flag, then wriggled between three defenders inside the area. He was brought down, but before the penalty could be given he was back on his feet to smash the ball home at the near post. He had earlier started the rout with a cool finish when one on one with the keeper. Playing as a centre forward, he got his second when he pivoted on the penalty spot and dispatched the ball into the roof of the net in a crowded area.

Danny Welbeck v GalatasarayOctober 1, 2014Champions League

Danny Welbeck ran riot against Galatasaray in the group stage of the 2014/15 Champions League. He prodded home the first goal midway through the first half, when he ran onto an excellent pass from Alexis Sanchez into the area. On the half hour he grabbed his second. After outmuscling his defender he bore down on goal and slipped the ball past the keeper. Sanchez scored our third before half-time but Welbeck had the last word early in the second half. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain found him in the box this time, and another coolly-taken first time finish from the England forward completed his treble. They were the first goals he had ever scored at Emirates Stadium, and it remains his only career hat-trick. Remarkably, they were the only Champions League goals he scored for us.

Theo Walcott v West Bromwich AlbionMay 24, 2015Premier League

Theo Walcott is the only man to appear on this list three times. He completed his hat-trick of hat-tricks in a 4-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on the final day of the 2014/15 season. In a game also remembered for Jack Wilshere’s Goal of the Season winner, Walcott scored all three of his goals in the first half. His first was a beauty, crashed into the top corner on the angle inside the area. He bundled his way through the defence to tuck home his second before Wilshere also got on the scoresheet in style. Walcott’s third was the easiest of the lot, a tap in at the far post from Santi Cazorla’s cross. The following week Walcott scored again in the 4-0 FA Cup final win over Aston Villa.

Olivier Giroud v Aston VillaMay 15, 2016Premier League

A textbook bullet Olivier Giroud header from Nacho Monreal’s cross started this hat-trick on the final day of the 2015/16 season. That got us going on just five minutes, but the second didn’t arrive until 12 minutes from time. The Frenchman swept home a left foot finish at the near post, from Mesut Ozil’s low cross, in front of the North Bank for his second. He stole in behind the defence two minutes later to slide in the third with his left-foot. Mikel Arteta thought he had brought the curtain down on his playing days with the fourth in injury-time, but it went down as a Mark Bunn own goal. The win was enough to take us above Tottenham on the final day to finish second in the Premier League, behind champions Leicester City.

Mesut Ozil v LudogoretsOctober 19, 2016Champions League

The last Champions League hat-trick we have scored at the Emirates was also the only hat-trick of Mesut Ozil’s Arsenal career. After helping us into a 3-0 lead, assisting Theo Walcott’s goal to make it 2-0, he assumed goalscoring duties himself, netting our last three goals in the final 34 minutes. First he finished right footed when one on one with the keeper inside the area after being set up by a long Santi Cazorla pass over the top. Next the German playmaker netted again with his weaker right foot, finishing first time from Lucas Perez’s cross. His third came four minutes from time, with a left-footed volley to make it 6-0. It was the only hat-trick of goals that Ozil ever scored in his career, but he did also have a hat-trick of assists for us, against CSKA Moscow in 2018.

Aaron Ramsey v EvertonFebruary 3, 2018Premier League

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan both made their full debuts at Emirates Stadium, but the despite both being involved in the goals, they were overshadowed by Aaron Ramsey. Mkhitaryan set up the first for the Welshman, squaring across the six-yard box for Ramsey to tuck home a first time shot. Laurent Koscielny doubled the lead on 14 minutes and five minutes later Ramsey had his second. He thumped home Alex Iwobi’s cutback from 20 yards out into the roof of the net. Aubameyang scored his debut goal from Mkhitaryan’s assist to make it 4-0 in a rampant first-half. But Ramsey put the icing on the cake late on, making it 5-1. Mkhitaryan completed a hat-trick of his own – of assists, laying it on a plate again for Ramsey to thump home his low cross.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang v Leeds UnitedFebruary 14, 2021Premier League

It was three years until we scored another hat-trick at the Emirates, this time Aubameyang was the star of the show. With supporters locked out of the stadium during Covid restrictions, Auba scored a 34-minute hat-trick in a 4-2 win. Inside the opening quarter of an hour, he ran at the defence before pulling the trigger and squeezing his shot inside the near post. His second was a penalty and he got his third two minutes after the restart. Emile Smith Rowe lifted his cross to the far post where Auba stooped to head in and make it 4-0. It was the first hat-trick of Mikel Arteta’s reign, and the second for Auba, after he’d scored three away to Valencia in 2019. He would score one more hat-trick for the club, away to West Brom in August 2021.

Eddie Nketiah v SunderlandDecember 21, 2021League Cup

Charlie Patino sealed this 5-1 Carabao Cup quarter-final win with a last-minute debut goal, but it was another Hale End product who had laid the platform with a hat-trick inside the hour mark. Eddie Nketiah grabbed a typical poacher’s goal to open the scoring, prodding home with his knee from close range after Rob Holding’s header was parried. He showed his striker’s instincts again in the second-half to turn home Nuno Tavares’s cross inside the six-yard box, and claimed his first career hat-trick moments later. This one was the pick of the bunch, Nicolas Pepe – who had scored the second goal – skinned his man on the right and crossed for our No. 14 who impudently flicked the ball past Lee Burge.

Eddie Nketiah v Sheffield UnitedOctober 28, 2023Premier League

Eddie Nketiah also scored the last Premier League hat-trick at Emirates Stadium, before Ebere Eze’s against Spurs. His first came when he controlled Declan Rice’s pass into the area, then cooly finished past the keeper. Early in the second half he thumped home a loose ball inside the area to double the lead, and made it 3-0 with an absolute screamer. He picked out the top corner from 20 yards for a memorable Emirates Stadium trio. All three goals came within the space of 30 minutes. Fabio Vieira and Takehiro Tomiyasu added late goals to add gloss to the scoreline.

Gabriel Jesus v Crystal PalaceDecember 18, 2024League Cup

Eddie Nketiah was on the scoresheet for the opposition the previous time we scored a home hat-trick. Jean-Philippe Mateta had put Crystal Palace ahead in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, but then Gabriel Jesus took over. He hadn’t scored a home goal for a year, but smashed three in 27 minutes to send us to the semi-finals. His first was a lovely dink over the goalkeeper after he rode a challenge inside the area. His second was an unerring finish in the area after being set up by Bukayo Saka. He wrapped up the win, and claimed the matchball, when he raced away from the halfway line, and confidently dispatched his shot. Nketiah scored a late consolation. Three days later Jesus grabbed two more against Palace in a 5-1 Premier League win at Selhurst Park.
