David Moyes has confirmed that Everton appealed Idrissa Gueye’s sending off against Manchester United. However, their attempts to overturn his three-match ban were rejected.
Gueye has been ruled out of the Blues’ matches against Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest after he was shown a red card in the 1-0 win at Old Trafford for slapping team-mate Michael Keane in the face.
And Moyes said: “We have appealed it, and our appeal was turned down.
“We haven’t been given any reason why it was turned down, but we did appeal it immediately.”
Gueye issued a statement of apology immediately after the game to Keane and the rest his Everton colleagues and on Thursday, the pair showed that they have made up with a light-hearted video posted by Thierno Barry on Instragram showing them stepping into a makeshift ‘ring’ at the club’s Finch Farm training complex.
Each are filmed wearing a single boxing glove as Beto stands between them like a referee and tells them to “touch glove.”
Keane then pretended to get a first blow in on a giggling Gueye before they them embrace.
The footage is also accompanied by the caption: “Only love here,” complete with a blue heart emoji.
Everton manager Moyes said: “It was over immediately when it was done, that was it.
“We moved on quite quickly and it was all sorted within the dressing room.
“We want passion, we don’t always want it in the style that it showed up on Monday night.
We certainly want that passion and that commitment from our players.”
At the time of the dismissal, the Premier League Match Centre said: “The referee’s call of red card to Gueye for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the action deemed to be a clear strike to the face of Keane.”
Gueye was sent off for violent conduct, with the law for such an offence dictating that he was guilty of: “Striking an opponent or any other person, on the head or face with their hand or arm, unless the force used was negligible.”
The first match the midfielder will miss is Saturday's showdown with Newcastle at Hill Dickinson Stadium (5.30pm kick-off).
