Luis Enrique has already made his feelings about coaching in England clear amid Liverpool links

Liverpool, the reigning champions of the Premier League, could be on the hunt for a new manager in the coming months if performances do not drastically improve – and Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique has been involved in conversations behind the scenes. And the Spaniard's comments regarding a move to England have now emerged.

Although the Reds bolster a reputation of not being trigger-happy when it comes to underperforming managers, Arne Slot's position at the club will begin to become untenable if they continue on such a downwards trajectory. On the worst run of form since 1953, Liverpool have suffered defeat nine times in their last 12 outings in all competitions.

In their title-defending campaign, Slot's men have fallen to the bottom half of the Premier League table – behind Merseyside rivals Everton – and they're also in a poor position in the Champions League league phase. In a period of time when victories are nothing short of crucial, Liverpool are set to face West Ham United, Sunderland and Leeds United.

Enrique's Thoughts on Managing in England Emerge Amid Links to Liverpool

With Slot feeling the pressure of managing a club the stature of Liverpool, it has been reported that Jurgen Klopp – a manager who left in the summer of 2024 after a successful period at the club – could be set for a sensational return to the Anfield hotseat. The German aside, though, long-term target Enrique could also be in the offing with the club planning for life after Slot.

Currently in charge of PSG, the 55-year-old guided the Ligue 1 behemoths to their first-ever Champions League triumph earlier this year and, at the time of writing, his contract runs out in the summer of 2027. Whether a mid-season managerial change is on the cards, however, remains to be seen.

Interestingly, Enrique's comments – regarding the prospect of managing a team in England – from 2013 have emerged. Although he joked that his Barcelona-born wife would not appreciate the change in weather, he did claim that moving to England would 'depend on the team' and their playing style. Speaking to FourFourTwo, he said:

"I'd like to manage in England at some point. My wife wouldn't like the weather – she's from Barcelona and likes the sun. It would depend on the team and the football they played."

He also noted that he studied the first season of Brendan Rodgers' tenure at Liverpool. "I like the way Brendan Rodgers interprets the game, how he gets the team playing together, though I know it has been difficult for him in his first year at Liverpool," Enrique said about Rodgers, who is just one of two Reds managers that have been sacked mid-season in the last century.

It's been over a decade since Enrique suggested spending some of his managerial career in England was certainly on the cards dependent on the situation – but he recently spoke about, ahead of his PSG side's encounter against Tottenham Hotspur, which they won 5-3, the difficulties of facing teams from the Premier League. "It depends on each English team," he quipped.

"We know that, given their style of play, we’ll have to be ready to defend when we don’t have the ball. We know they like to play. There will also be set pieces, because they’ll play long balls for every foul during the match, and they’re physically strong. They might be superior to us in that area, but we’re used to it, because we look for players with individual technical quality more than physical quality."

Although he waxed poetic about the physically-straining nature of playing against English sides, he also claimed that teams possess excellent technical qualities too. "But they have technical quality too, because they have a lot of international players, almost all of them. They’re a top-level team, of course," he said about Spurs. "I think we have to be ready to be competitive throughout the entire match.”
