Liverpool make Ibrahima Konate decision following Real Madrid withdrawal

Liverpool’s contract saga with Ibrahima Konate has taken a significant twist with Real Madrid officially withdrawing their interest in the French defender.

The Spanish giants have informed Liverpool “directly and unequivocally” that they will not be pursuing a move for the 26-year-old, despite months of heavy speculation linking him with a switch to the Bernabeu.

Konate has struggled during Liverpool’s torrid run of nine defeats in their last 12 matches across all competitions, although he is far from the only individual to be culpable for current proceedings.

He was substituted in the second half during both the 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest and the dismal 4-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League at Anfield

Despite the Frenchman’s questionable performances this week and the months of Los Blancos speculation, the Liverpool hierarchy have decided to continue efforts to renew Konate’s contract.

At least, that’s according to Sky Sports’ Vinny O’Connor, who has reported:

“Liverpool remain committed to re-signing Ibrahima Konate if terms can be agreed.”

“Konate’s deal runs out at the end of the season and he is expected to explore his options in January, when he is free to speak to foreign clubs.”

“Real Madrid have been among the teams interested in signing Konate on a free transfer – but there are reports today that the interest is subsiding.”

“Liverpool will only agree terms with Konate if they are in keeping with their wage structure and they are also exploring the market for potential replacements.”
