Mohamed Salah told now is the time to quit Liverpool for Saudi Pro League

Mohamed Salah has been told that the time has come for him to move to the Saudi Pro League, amid his disappointing form since the start of the season.

Only Hugo Ekitike has outscored Salah for Liverpool this term, but the Egyptian's general level of play has been some way off what it was last year. The Egyptian was ineffective in Liverpool's 4-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, and has only scored twice in his last 12 appearances for the Reds.

Former Everton striker Yakubu thinks there's a good chance that Salah will move to a new club at the end of the season.

“Salah has never found himself in this position before," Yakubu told SportsCasting. "In the past he would always score goals before but it is hard for him now.

"In the Premier League age can catch up with you quickly. When it comes to age, the Premier League is all about running!

"It’s a very tough league and I think this will be Mo Salah’s last season at Liverpool. He could move to the Saudi League. He’s done a lot for Liverpool and he will always be one of the best players to ever grace the Premier League.”

Salah's downturn comes after he produced arguably the best season of his career, registering 34 goals and 23 assists across the 2024-25 campaign.

That brilliant form saw Salah rewarded with a two-year contract extension at Anfield, and some observers have suggested that the new deal prompted him to lose focus,

Yakubu, though, does not think that is the case, and thinks the 33-year-old's struggles are simply a part of the game.

“He [Salah] might have signed a new contract but it might not be working like it used to when he was looking for the new contract," Salah added.

"He has tried to give everything for Liverpool, but this is just football. One bad season doesn’t mean he’s a bad player. They just need to enjoy him and give him support. He’s done so much for the club and I wish him all the best if it is his last season at Liverpool.“

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, meanwhile, rubbished calls for Liverpool to drop Salah after the loss to PSV.

Gerrard told TNT Sports: "What is the other option [if Salah is dropped]? Chiesa is more of an impact player, and I think it sends the wrong message to everyone.

"Liverpool is in a real difficult moment. Salah is a senior player, vice-captain and has been the talisman. He has been an iconic figure here.

"That doesn't mean he should start every single game, and you can rest him or take him off in games, but whoever is managing Liverpool would start Mo Salah. Liverpool needs its best players on the pitch."
