Fitness Update Ahead of Sunday’s Trip to West Ham

Arne Slot was able to provide some good news in his surprise Thursday press conference ahead of the next Premier League outing on Sunday. Alisson should return in goal on Sunday, as he missed the PSV game due to illness.

Florian Wirtz will have completed his rehab Friday and will likely be back in team training before Sunday’s trip, though his fitness remains up in the air.

Hugo Ekitiké was forced off mid-week with a back issue, though Slot has said this is not a major injury concern — though his fitness for Sunday is in question given the business of the schedule (and certainly the club won’t want to turn a minor issue into a major one).

Joe Gomez is “close” to being fit for competitive minutes, and Slot noted that his fitness was not at issue in the substitution decisions on Wednesday; instead, when facing a deficit the boss prefers attacking substitutions versus like-for-like defensive ones.

It is perhaps also notable that Ibrahima Konaté, who _looked_ rusty, was not fit enough to train in the two days prior to the PSV match. As such, Slot has issues at center back, with no natural centerback partner for Virgil Van Dijk seeming fit enough for a full 90 at present, let alone doing so at peak physical condition.
