David Ornstein has provided an update on this Liverpool star’s current situation at Anfield

Liverpool’s current contract situation with Ibrahima Konate could ‘still go either way’, according to a new update on his future.

The Reds have been trying to reach a new agreement with the centre-back for months now but so far, nothing has convinced him to put pen to paper. Earlier this month, it was reported that Konate had rejected a third offer from Liverpool, who remain keen on keeping him at Anfield.

Football Insider reported that the Premier League champions are ‘extremely reluctant’ to lose Konate, despite his standard of performances this season coming under criticism from supporters.

It has been public knowledge for some time now that Real Madrid have been interested in signing Konate for free next year.

Poaching players as free agents or for a minimal fee has become a key part of the Spanish side’s transfer strategy in recent years. Los Blancos paid just £10 million to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold early ahead of his contract expiration this summer.

Konate will be free to enter pre-contract negotiations with overseas clubs in January but it now looks like Real Madrid will no longer be one of those interested in talking to him about a move once the season ends.

According to David Ornstein, Madrid have now pulled away from their interest in Konate. Los Blancos are indeed on the market for a new centre-back but it’s not going to be Liverpool’s No.5.

The reliable journalist has reported: “Real Madrid considered Ibrahima Konate but inform Liverpool they have no interest in signing the France international. The 26-year-old’s unresolved LFC contract situation could still go either way.”

Based on Ornstein’s update, Liverpool may still have the opportunity to convince Konate to pen a new deal, despite him already knocking them back three times.

What has been said about Ibrahima Konate?

Liverpool fans have been left fuming with Konate’s performances of late. Following the latest defeat to PSV, supporters called for the defender to be dropped and even sold in January, after his error led to the Dutch side’s third goal.

Even Jamie Carragher couldn’t hide his frustrations when watching Konate struggle against PSV.

The former Liverpool defender was on pundit duty for CBS Sports during the match and he was captured raging about the Reds’ performance while talking on the phone off-air.

In a TikTok video that has since been deleted, Carragher didn’t hold back with his thoughts on the performance of Liverpool, and Konate in particular.

“Watch Konate, here. Oh my God. I've f****ng had enough of them, honest to God, that Konate.

“I mean, that's a sackable offence for the manager, he keeps picking him. He should be sacked for that. Have they scored again, 4-1. What's this, 9 in 12?”
