Liverpool made big transfer'mistake'as Richard Hughes'overruled'Arne Slot

Liverpool has been told that it made a mistake in letting Luis Diaz leave the club during the summer transfer window.

Diaz became Liverpool's third most lucrative player sale of all time in the off-season, joining Bayern Munich for a fee that could rise to $87 million.

His recent red card against Paris Saint-Germain aside, Diaz has started the season brilliantly for Bayern, registering 11 goals and five assists across 18 appearances in all competitions.

Liverpool, meanwhile, is having an awful time at the moment, having lost nine of its last 12 games in all competitions, and one of the many things that the team seems to be missing at the moment is Diaz's directness on the left flank.

It was reported earlier this week that Diaz was actually sold against head coach Arne Slot's wishes.

Caught Offside claimed that Slot pushed for Diaz to be handed a new contract at Anfield, but sporting director Richard Hughes did not see the value in handing the winger a bumper deal, and opted to cash in when Bayern presented the Reds with an attractive offer.

Diaz's deal was due to expire in the summer of 2027, but he was significantly underpaid relative to his standing in the squad, and the 28-year-old was keen to secure a lucrative deal at this stage in his career.

Diaz is believed to have more than quadrupled his salary with his move to Bayern, and the Bavarian club is being rewarded for showing faith in the former Porto star.

Now, former Chelsea and Manchester City star Shaun Wright-Phillips has given his take on Liverpool's decision to sell Diaz, and he believes the Reds make two mistakes: selling Diaz in the first place, and then failing to replace him with a like-for-like player.

“Yes. I thought that [it would be a mistake] when I heard it before it even happened," Wright-Phillips said. "I couldn’t quite understand it.

"That was a mistake, but an even bigger mistake was not replacing him. You’re losing a winger, so replace him with another winger.

"For whatever reason, they chose to look elsewhere. I think a few Liverpool fans recognised just how good he was for them, but a lot of people didn’t really understand how important and effective he was until he started doing it for Bayern instead.”
