Jermaine Pennant thinks there's a manager Liverpool could hire who would unlock Florian Wirtz

Liverpool have been linked with several managers amid Arne Slot’s struggles to turn around what has been a poor season so far.

Despite fans not being happy, it is thought that FSG are still backing Slot for the time being.

But should they eventually part ways with the Dutchman, several options have been mooted, including Xabi Alonso.

It has been suggested that Alonso would manage Liverpool if and when the opportunity arises.

Xabi Alonso could unlock Florian Wirtz

Should that happen at some point in the future, Jermaine Pennant reckons the Spaniard could be the man to unlock Florian Wirtz.

Speaking on the Wildcards podcast, he said: “Xabi Alonso, he’s under pressure at Real Madrid. Isn’t he?.

“I think there’s a rumoured ultimatum. But if he was to come to Liverpool, you’d get best out of Florian Wirtz. He had him at Leverkusen, and Frimpong.”

There have been mixed reports about Alonso’s long-term future in Spain, including mentions of player unrest despite Los Blancos currently sitting top of the division.

But another suggested that Madrid are backing their manager at present.

So, for the time being, it looks as though it is down to Slot to get the best out of Wirtz in a Liverpool shirt.

Florian Wirtz is not the problem at Liverpool

Since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen, where he previously worked under Alonso, Wirtz has been made a scapegoat.

However, the German has missed the Reds’ last two matches and, unsurprisingly, they haven’t looked any better without him.

Midfield remains a problem area, while Cody Gakpo is failing to impress in the left-wing role.

Wirtz could return for Liverpool versus West Ham United on Saturday after Slot shared a positive injury update on Thursday.

But unless there are huge changes at Anfield in the coming weeks, it seems clear he will, like the rest of the team, continue to underperform.
