Emile Heskey claims Liverpool player has been poor for way longer than people realise

Several Liverpool players have looked well off their game during the 2025/26 campaign.

Despite talk of a new contract, Ibrahima Konate has been struggling in the back four this term.

Alongside the Frenchman, Virgil van Dijk’s leadership is being questioned by fans and Wayne Rooney.

Meanwhile, though his overall goal contribution record is by no means terrible, Mohamed Salah’s decline remains a point of discussion.

Emile Heskey highlights Mohamed Salah issue

Now, speaking on the Hawksbee & Jacobs Daily podcast, Emile Heskey has become the latest figure to question the Egyptian, explaining how he has been masking ‘a lot of issues’ for a while.

He said: “With Salah, Salah’s an interesting one, he scored loads of goals, so he’s masked a lot of issues that goals will generally do.

“He goes missing in games at times, and because he’ll score two, three at the end of the game, everyone remembers that. But he’s been doing this for a while, and you need, pairs like that, you need in your team at times, because you, and you keep on the pitch, just for that one little moment, that they score a goal.

“But the only thing is if they don’t score that goal, and they haven’t given you any running about, haven’t given you any tracking back, given you all the other side of the game, it’s very difficult to defend them.”

Mohamed Salah Liverpool stats in 25/26 vs 24/25

Dietmar Hamann branded Salah ‘disgraceful’ after the recent 4-1 hammering at the hands of PSV.

Jamie Carragher wants the Liverpool winger to step up off the pitch as well and start speaking to the press more.

But has Salah actually been that bad so far this season?

In 12 Premier League matches this term, he has scored four goals and provided two assists for Liverpool.

It’s a fine record, but it does pale in comparison to the lofty standards he’s set in previous years.

At this stage of the 2024/25 campaign, Salah had already scored 10 goals and assisted six after gameweek 12.
