David Moyes makes Gary Speed plea for Everton and Newcastle match-goers

Saturday’s meeting between Everton and Newcastle comes just two days after the 14th anniversary of Gary Speed’s passing.

It is fitting that two of the Welsh legend’s former sides are meeting at this time of year and Everton will mark the anniversary ahead of the game.

David Moyes did not have the pleasure of managing Speed, who played for the Blues 63 times between 1996 and 1998.

Eddie Howe has paid respect to Everton’s performances this season under their 62-year-old manager.

Everton have the opportunity to put the pressure on the European spots with three points against the Magpies.

However, Moyes took his opportunity to remind fans of the role they play in remembering Speed’s legacy on Saturday.

It will mark Newcastle’s first visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, which has proved somewhat of a fortress for the Blues.

Speaking in his programme notes, Moyes has urged fans of both sides to visit Speed’s memorial bench and remember the footballing hero just days after the anniversary of his passing.

“I would also like to mention a special player who proudly represented both Everton and Newcastle, the late and much-missed Gary Speed,” said the Everton boss.

This was an unforgettable win over Newcastle!

“Today [Saturday] the Club is unveiling a bench in his memory, a place where people who feel the need to talk can go and have a conversation.

“I hope both Everton and Newcastle supporters will take the time to visit the bench and remember Gary Speed when they do so.”

Moyes has been massively praised this season for the improvements seen in recent weeks as the Blues leapfrogged their city rivals in the league.

And his comments in Saturday’s programme just go to show the class act that he is.

Everton need to handle their business against Newcastle

Once that whistle blows, Everton have to lock in and keep their positive form going.

Everton are going to be without Idrissa Gana Gueye following his infamous red card received on Monday night at Old Trafford.

But Moyes won’t want to hear any excuses as the Blues could secure their third consecutive victory in the Premier League for almost two years.

Under the lights, the Blues could stir up a huge atmosphere just days on from Man United fans praising Everton’s away support.

Three points would be a real statement for the Toffees.
