Manchester City will try to steal a march on Liverpool and Manchester United in the race for Elliot Anderson - even though he could command a price tag of £100million.

The Nottingham Forest star has earned multiple admirers since arriving at the City Ground little over a year ago and developed into a formidable player, even breaking into the England side. And it seems that the Premier League's elite are no longer willing to watch on from the sidelines as he continues to impress on a weekly basis in the Premier League.

Manchester City are the latest team to have scouted the 23-year-old in recent weeks, with Mirror Football revealing last month that they were keen on him. The player's versatility in the centre of the field is said to be appealing to City, who are said to prefer Anderson to Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton.

City will face still competition from Liverpool and Manchester United and the club are aware of their rivals' interest. But a return to Newcastle is already all but ruled out with the finances involved expected to be out of their budget, according to The Mail.

Forest are unwilling to do a deal in January as they look to continue their momentum under Sean Dyche. A transfer ahead of the World Cup is plausible provided his suitors are willing to pay a premium price, with the possibility of a £100million deal seemingly on the table.

England boss Tuchel has made no secret of how highly he rates Anderson, describing him as 'important' after just a handful of caps. "Anderson is a key player for us at the moment," he said this month. "He is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League - that's why he is with us and starting for us. He deserves it because he has been nothing but impressive. He has to keep on going now though.

'He is a very complete and mobile midfielder, and that's what he keeps showing me. He is an elite player with the right attitude and a lot of talent. He is fulfilling his role in the best way possible so we are very happy with him."

A move for Andreson may not yet be City's only time in competition with United and Liverpool as all three clubs chase Antoine Semenyo. The Bournemouth attacker is available for £65m in January due to a release clause in the contract he signed in the summer and City are prepared to see how that unfolds with their rivals ahead of them in the chase.

A wide player is said to be of a more immediate concern for Guardiola's side. The club are said to be deliberating between a direct winger in Semenyo's mould or a profile closer to Phil Foden's.
