Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope was left out of Eddie Howe's team to face Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium tonight.
Howe named Aaron Ramsdale between the posts for United's first ever visit to Everton's new ground. Pope is understood to be injured despite strong suggestions he would be dropped after a clanger in the 2-1 defeat to Marseille in the Champions League.
Veteran stopper John Ruddy was Newcastle's back-up option on the bench. Howe named Tino Livramento at right-back with Malick Thiaw and Dan Burn in the middle of his defence while Lewis Hall started at left-back.
Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley, and Joelinton patrolled the midfield, and there was a slight surprise as Anthony Elanga started the game on the right-hand side of the attack. Harvey Barnes retained his place and Nick Woltemade led the line.
A Newcastle statement confirmed the injury for Pope and read: "Six changes from Tuesday's game in Marseille as Aaron Ramsdale, Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley, Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Nick Woltemade all come into the starting XI Nick Pope misses today's game due to injury."
Newcastle United XI vs Everton
UNITED: Ramsdale; Livramento, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Guimaraes, Miley, Joelinton; Elanga, Barnes; Woltemade
Subs: Ruddy, Schar, Tonali, Gordon, J Murphy, Willock, A Murphy, Ramsey, Neave.
