Phil Foden scored a stoppage-time winner to spare Manchester City’s blushes in a 3-2 win over struggling Leeds on Saturday after Pep Guardiola’s men had surrendered a two-goal lead at the Etihad Stadium.
Having lost to Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen in the past week, City were facing the prospect of failing to meet expectations again until Foden rendered Leeds’ second-half efforts futile.
City had been in complete control at the break thanks to goals from Foden and Josko Gvardiol in the first half, but the Croatian was at least partly culpable twice as Leeds battled back to level in the second period.
Foden ensured City just about got the job done, however, dealing under-pressure Leeds boss Daniel Farke another blow in the form of a fourth successive league defeat.
There was to be no 100th Premier League goal for Erling Haaland, though, with the Norwegian having one of his quieter games in a City shirt.
Everything looked to be going rather swimmingly for City, who quickly got their noses in front.
Matheus Nunes broke into the right side of the box after a one-two and saw his cut-back turned in by Foden with just 59 seconds on the clock.
City seemingly meant business, with that the quickest Premier League goal of the 2025-26 season.
It was indicative of an efficient first-half display from City, who were deservedly 2-0 up in the 25th minute as Josko Gvardiol bundled in from close range at a corner.
The hosts were utterly dominant, with their 2.4 expected goals (xG) before half-time the most by any team in the first half of a Premier League game this term.
But Leeds – who’d offered nothing before the break – fought back admirably.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, introduced at half-time, made the most of a mix-up between Nunes and Gvardiol in the City box before slotting home one of the easiest goals of his career, and the fifth quickest by a substitute this term.
Gvardiol endured another nightmare past the hour mark.
The Croatian dived in to win the ball from Calvert-Lewin but completely mistimed his lunge to haul the Leeds striker down. Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Nmecha’s subsequent penalty, but the German buried the rebound.
A game of two halves it certainly was, with City managing just one shot between half-time and the 88th minute, while Leeds managed six in that time having attempted only two in the first half.
But City’s star quality shone through at the end, as Foden worked space for himself just inside the area and found the bottom-left corner through a crowd of players to end Leeds’ admirable resistance.
