Everton v Newcastle United: The Premier League have released a statement following VAR’s decision to rule-out Thierno Barry’s goal.

Having failed to win on the road in the Premier League since April 7, Newcastle United headed to the Hill Dickinson Stadium aiming to right those wrongs on a soggy November night.

Within 45 minutes, any worries that this may be another trip to forget for Eddie Howe’s men were banished as the visitors found themselves three goals to the good. In fact, it took them just one minute to nudge themselves into the lead when Malick Thiaw nodded home a Lewis Miley corner.

That lead was doubled midway through the first-half when Miley slotted a volley under Jordan Pickford to double their lead. The Magpies had weathered a bit of a storm from the hosts prior to that goal which firmly knocked the win out of Everton’s sails.

If the second knocked the wind out of Everton, then Nick Woltemade delivered the knockout blow just before the half-time whistle as he lobbed Pickford following some good work by Anthony Elanga on the wing. The Toffees headed into the tunnel for the break to a round of boos from the home crowd, with some not taking up their seats in the second half.

Those that did return, though, only saw Thiaw notch another for the visitors as he headed home from a deep cross by Lewis Hall. That goal ensured that Newcastle had scored more in the first hour of their visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium than they had managed in every other away Premier League game this season combined.

Everton thought they had found a route back into the game, though, when Thierno Barry netted his first goal of the season. The young striker found some space in the box and hit a left-footed effort past Aaron Ramsdale.

However, replays showed that Barry’s arm had made contact with the ball before he lashed it home. Under Premier League rules, because Barry was the last person to touch the ball before it hit the net, meant that VAR had to intervene and disallow the goal.

The PL Match Centre explained the decision on X, writing: ‘#EVENEW - 65’ VAR OVERTURN After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to Everton. Referee announcement: “After review, Everton 11 commits an accidental handball before the goal is scored. The final decision is to cancel the goal and award a direct free kick to Newcastle.”’

That decision was not received well by the home fans, especially when a replay of the incident flashed up on the huge scoreboards at either end of the stadium. Their dissatisfaction, though, didn’t last too long as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, their hero from Monday night’s win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, did pull a goal back with a wonderful touch and finish past Ramsdale.
