Kings star Zach LaVine isn’t backing down after getting into an altercation with a fan during Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

LaVine discussed the controversy for the first time in an interview with The Sacramento Bee following a 128-119 loss to the Utah Jazz on Friday at Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

“I could care less,” LaVine said. “If somebody talks slick to your bench or to your coaches or your players, I’m going to say something. I could care less. He’s irrelevant to me. He’s valued with his opinion and he’s a passionate fan. I respect that, but also you’re not just going to talk that way to people, so if that’s the case I’d do that s*** again.”

Kings season ticket holder Devlin Carter was escorted out of the arena following a fiery confrontation with LaVine during the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s 112-100 loss to the Suns. Video of the altercation spread quickly on social media with many people commenting that Carter was speaking for all Kings fans.

“I got kicked out of the game tonight, but at least the Kings fans feel me!!” Carter said in an Instagram Story. “I said, We aint come here to watch yall not play defense, LaVine said then go home n**** ... Say less!! No you go home since you not playing defense anyway.”

Carter didn’t stop there. He later posted another video to Instagram explaining his frustration in greater detail.

“You get paid over $40 million,” Carter said of LaVine. “You only got eight points and we in the fourth quarter. You didn’t show up. Once again, you didn’t show up. All these fans in Sacramento deserve better than that.

“You should know you playing like trash and you should be harder on yourself than the fans are hard on you. ... Sacramento Kings fans deserve better.”

LaVine snapped out of his recent shooting slump in the loss to Utah, scoring 34 points on 12-of-22 shooting while going 4 of 9 from 3-point range. In the six games leading up to Friday’s contest, he averaged 12.8 points while going 31 of 72 (.430) from the field and 8 of 34 (.235) from beyond the arc.

Following the game, LaVine was asked about the team’s effort after losing 10 of 12 to fall to 5-15 on the season.

“I think you watched tonight,” LaVine said. “Guys are out there playing hard. Going through different matchups, playing lots of minutes or going out there and playing in awkward positions. That’s what we have to do. I think today we brought the fight to them.

“There were some times throughout the game where we just weren’t able to get over the hump. The end of the second quarter, they went on like a 7-0 or 8-0 run. And the end of the third quarter, they went on an 8-0 or 9-0 run, so that puts you in a hole. You try to come back in the fourth, but guys gave a good effort. We’ve just got to figure out how to win those games. We’re playing well in spurts.”

Kings coach Doug Christie offered a lengthy response when asked if he has taken issue with LaVine’s effort at either end of the floor.

“I just think you never want to let your offense dictate your defense because, in many ways, I think that’s the way you work out of things,” Christie said. “For players, everyone responds and reacts differently. He has to continue to work his way out of that.

“I mean, we’ve seen him shoot. Even at the beginning of the season, he was shooting well, averaging 30 points. And you go through slumps, but how you work through slumps is you can use your gravity on the floor, your athleticism to run to corners, obviously go in and help the bigs rebound.

“There are a lot of different ways to affect it. You just don’t, overall as a team, let your offense dictate anything that’s happening on the defensive side of the floor. That one is — we’re not compromising there. We have to make sure that the effort is there.”
