Everton 1-4 Newcastle United: Eddie Howe’s side picked up their first Premier League away win of the season in emphatic fashion on Saturday evening.
Newcastle United cruised to their first Premier League away win of the season with a 4-1 win on their first visit to Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Malick Thiaw got The Magpies off to a flyer with the earliest goal of the Premier League season so far in the opening minute before Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade found the net to make it 3-0 before half-time. Thiaw grabbed his second and Newcastle’s fourth of the game to put the result beyond doubt in the second half.
Everton pulled back a consolation as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall brought the ball down and clipped the ball in for his second in as many games.
But before that, Everton thought they had scored through Thierno Barry but a VAR check quickly ruled the goal out for handball.
Premier League issue statement after VAR incident at Everton v Newcastle United
When replays of the disallowed goal were displayed around the Hill Dickinson Stadium, there were audible groans from the home supporters in objection to the call.
But the Premier League’s Match Centre explained the decision quickly, as did referee Craig Pawson over the stadium PA.
The Premier League Match Centre posted: “#EVENEW - 65’ VAR OVERTURN After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to Everton.
“Referee announcement: ‘After review, Everton 11 commits an accidental handball before the goal is scored. The final decision is to cancel the goal and award a direct free kick to Newcastle.’”
Eddie Howe on Newcastle United win
Newcastle were able to see out the win comfortably to secure their first three points on the road in the Premier League since April.
After the match Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “We've got a lot of work to do, obviously, to consistently say that we've got to solve some of the issues that we've had, but it's a step forward and that's a big moment for us, confidence-wise, for the general feeling, back-to-back wins in the Premier League, that will help us to no end.
“And now we have two home games that we need to try and capitalise on.”
Next up for Newcastle is Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park on Tuesday night (8:15pm kick-off).
