Opinion
It ended Everton 1 Newcastle 4.
Ahead of each game we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives following the match.
An interesting Premier League game on Merseyside…
Plenty to talk about after this one.
On this occasion it is Simon Ritter:
**POSITIVES**
**Attack from the back**
Malick Thiaw scored his long-awaited first goal for Newcastle United, the quickest strike in the Premier League this season.
Having been denied by a goal-line clearance in Marseille, this time nobody was stopping his header from Lewis Miley’s excellent left-wing corner.
**He’s still only 19**
Young Miley can live the teenage dream for a few more months.
An assist for the first goal and a cool finish to put us two up.
Few opponents nutmeg Jordan Pickford from distance but our midfielder did just that. He could be set for a storming rest of the season.
**Eddie the Unpredictable**
Our head coach rang the changes and registered a first away win in the EPL since April.
At times against Everton we were playing total football, with the nominal 4-3-3 morphing into any number of combinations.
Am I entitled to feel a bit smug after stating a few days ago that correctly naming an Eddie Howe line-up in advance is almost impossible?
With two games a week, flexibility has to be his friend.
(Mentioned in despatches: Elanga using his pace impressively, Hall and Livramento becoming more match-fit, BNW showcasing his superlative technique, Big Joe somewhere near his best.)
**NEGATIVES**
**Careless in possession**
Despite changing the midfield and defence, Newcastle were still careless in possession, giving the ball away far too often.
Against a team with any sort of half-decent attack we would have conceded more than the one consolation goal.
**An extra man**
For about 20 minutes until Miley’s goal, Everton seemed to be playing with an extra man.
They worked the ball impressively and would have scored if Big Dan Burn and Thiaw had not been outstanding.
**It could/should have been six!**
At least three one-on-ones with Pickford were not exploited.
A 6-1 scoreline, based on chances made, would have been a fair result.
Aaron Ramsdale was redundant for much of the match but almost laid on an equaliser after 22 minutes with a hospital pass to Bruno Guimaraes.
