Everton head coach David Moyes couldn’t help but praise Newcastle United following the 4-1 win for Eddie Howe’s side on Saturday.

Malick Thiaw put Newcastle ahead from a corner inside the opening minute before Lewis Miley made it 2-0 thanks to a Jordan Pickford error. Nick Woltemade made it 3-0 with an audacious chip moments before half-time then Thiaw added a fourth in the second half with another header.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall pulled back a consolation for The Toffees in the closing stages of the game.

And afterwards, Everton boss David Moyes was honest in his assessment.

David Moyes praises NUFC after Everton thrashing

“We were beaten by the better team, there's no doubt about that,” Moyes said. “You mustn't underestimate, [Newcastle] are a Champions League team.

“I know they haven't won away from home, but they probably had a different feeling losing to Marseille in midweek. We had a different feeling when we beat Manchester United away from home.

“We go into it knowing that they're making sure they're going to try and get something out of the game. They got off to a great start, we didn't. Something really to hang on to as well.”

The result saw Newcastle leapfrog Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United in the Premier League table and keep within touching distance of the European places.

“We're competitive, if we'd won tonight, I don't know where we would have gone in the league, but it might have been in a pretty healthy position,” Moyes added. “So we're not a million miles off it, but now when it comes down to individual games, you know, we might not have enough.”

David Moyes makes ‘powerful’ Newcastle United claim

Everton beat Newcastle at St James’ Park on the final day of the 2024/25 season which would have cost Howe’s side Champions League qualification had Aston Villa not lost at Manchester United.

And Moyes described The Magpies as ‘the most powerful team in the Premier League’ - though they have some competition in the form of the Premier League leaders.

“We beat Newcastle at St James' Park when they were going for the Champions League, so we can go and beat them,” said the Everton head coach. “But tonight they were far too powerful for us. Maybe the strongest, maybe the most powerful team in the Premier League.

“Maybe Arsenal might sway them on that. Strong team, big, every player big, physical, hard to play against.”

Eddie Howe reacts to Newcastle United win

Reflecting on his side’s first away win of the Premier League season, Howe said: “I was really pleased for the squad today because it was a squad victory, really. We made changes because I wanted no fatigue on the pitch. I didn't want the feeling that I had after the Brentford game, the West Ham game, where I felt we were tired and lethargic.

“So with that in mind, I think we have to trust the squad and use the squad. And they repaid that faith. The players that came in, I thought, were excellent.

“The players that remained from the previous games did well, too. I thought we had a good look about us. I thought we had our athleticism and pace in the right areas of the pitch. And, yes, the players played very well.”
