Florian Wirtz has quietly done something stunning since joining Liverpool which should give fans hope - opinion

Few players have received as much negative attention at Liverpool this season as Florian Wirtz.

There had been huge excitement and expectation when the German was picked up for a nine-figure sum from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer.

Known as one of the most technically gifted talents in European football, most pundits and fans agreed that Liverpool had signed a player who was too good to fail.

Unfortunately, Wirtz has badly struggled in the months since his arrival. Without a Premier League goal or assist to his name, the 22-year-old has become an easy target.

His failure to hit the ground running has led to many questioning whether Wirtz will ever turn his form around at Liverpool. But after hearing some insight on what he has quietly done behind the scenes since joining the Reds, fans should have more hope than ever.

Florian Wirtz is taking Premier League adaptation seriously

Looking at things from a pure statistical point of view, it is tough to argue that Wirtz has been anything like a success at Liverpool so far. However, the No. 7 has largely been fine during games.

More end product is clearly needed, and it is blatant that joining the intensity of the Premier League has been an eye-opener for Wirtz, but he has also been unlucky at times.

There are some who are desperate to paint him as another expensive flop who simply could not match the physicality of the English top division.

While it is true that Wirtz has looked lightweight at times, a revelation from The Times on Saturday suggests that this is soon going to change.

They report that the Germany international has packed on a stunning 2.5kg of ‘lean muscle’ in the past four months. His workrate behind the scenes is said to be ‘through the roof’ as he aims to make the desired impact.

These are not the actions of a player who is sitting and feeling sorry for himself. Wirtz’s desire to work hard in order to make things better should inspire hope in every Liverpool fan that his current form is merely temporary.

When will Florian Wirtz come good at Liverpool?

“So far, everything is going as expected; it’s a completely normal settling-in process, entirely independent of any transfer fee.

“Florian consciously took a step to become an even better footballer. And he doesn’t regret it at all. He’s doing well in Liverpool, he looks forward to every training session, and he’s settled in with the team. We’re 100 percent satisfied with how things are going so far.”

Better times are coming for Wirtz

Often when a player like Wirtz begins to struggle in the Premier League, the pace of the division is attributed as the root cause.

Many times, they quickly realise that they cannot be a success and begin to look elsewhere.

For Wirtz, though, that does not feel like the case. His mentality is extremely strong, and the fact he is working hard and adding muscle suggests he knows what he needs to do to adapt.

The process was always likely to take some time, and although it perhaps should not have taken quite so long, the next patch of games gives Wirtz the chance to put his work into action on the pitch.

Fingers crossed he can get fit once again, because he is going to be crucial to getting Liverpool’s season back on track once he is. Better times are coming for Wirtz as long as he keeps on putting in these hard yards.
