Tottenham And Arsenal The "Main 2 Teams" In Battle For £78m Ex-Chelsea Target Striker

Tottenham and Arsenal are reportedly the frontrunners in the race for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa this winter.

The Gunners are in a brilliant position right now, they are top of both the Premier League and the Champions League after beating Tottenham last weekend, and then beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League in midweek.

Mikel Arteta will be going into January without any obvious needs, as his side are deep in virtually every position, however, there could be a couple of potential departures, who may need replacing if they do leave.

Gabriel Jesus has been rumoured as a potential sale for Arsenal in January, as the striker has struggled with injury problems for the last two years. He could either stay in Europe, or reports have said he could go back to Brazil to end his career. The 28-year-old is still understood to be worth over £20m, so if Arsenal do sell him, they could sign a striker who is younger as a replacement.

Arsenal and Spurs leading race for Aghehowa

Samu Aghehowa has been a long-term target for the Gunners, the Porto striker has been on fire since moving to Portugal in 2024. The 21-year-old has scored 36 goals in 60 games for Porto, and he is undoubtedly one of the most exciting young strikers in world football.

According to Caught Offside Journalist Mark Brus, Arsenal and Spurs are leading the race for Samu, despite the fact that Chelsea nearly signed him last year. The report also includes that Newcastle have shown an interest in the 21-year-old.

Brus says that Arsenal and Spurs are the “two main teams to watch” in the Aghehowa saga, as the Gunners consider long-term alternatives to Jesus, especially if the Brazilian striker were to leave in the January transfer window.

Samu has a release clause of £87.5m, but, it is understood that Porto would be prepared to accept less, with a minimum demand of £78m at the moment. However, if the player was tempted to leave, Arsenal could likely get him for less if he requested to leave Porto amid the Gunners’ pursuit of him.
