Jody Morris names player Chelsea will have a “fight on their hands” to sign in 2026

Jody Morris believes Chelsea will have a fight on their hands if they decided to enter the race for Crystal Palace centre back Marc Guehi.

Despite losing Levi Colwill to an ACL injury before the start of the season, Chelsea didn’t sign another centre back despite public pleas from Enzo Maresca.

The only defensive arrival in the summer was Jorrel Hato from Ajax, with the teenager back-up to Marc Cucurella at left back, although he can also play at centre back.

Chelsea have had issues at centre back at the start of the season and conceded a number of poor goals through individual errors.

However, Maresca seems to have settled on a partnership of Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah, and the Blues are now on a run of four consecutive clean sheets across all competitions.

January is round the corner, but it’s unclear if the Blues will look to sign another centre back, but they have been linked with Nottingham Forest’s Murillo.

Chelsea were linked with Guehi last summer, but that interest appears to have died down, although Morris feels the Blues would have a fight on their hands if they decided to go in for Guehi.

“I think if Chelsea were in for him, I know that they were looking at him a while ago, if they are in for him, they’ll have a fight on their hands,” he told talkSPORT.

Guehi is out of contract next summer, and saw a move to Liverpool fall through on deadline day, but won’t have a shortage of suitors for his signature.

Aaron Anselmino doing well at Borussia Dortmund

If Chelsea don’t opt to sign a centre half they have a couple of young promising defenders out on loan this season in Aaron Anselmino and Mamadou Sarr.

Anselmino is on loan at Borussia Dortmund and has impressed boss Niko Kovac, whilst he scored his first goal in a 2-1 win away at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

If the Argentine continues to impress this season, then he could find himself as part of the Chelsea first team squad next season.
