Matchday Memories: On This Day 1974 – Paisley’s Reds Held At Highfield Road By Milne’s Men

ImageOn this last day of November in 1974 the Sky Blues under their ‘gaffer’ Gordon Milne (now a CCFPA member) were taking on the mighty Liverpool at Highfield Road in a Division One game. The Reds had rested their feared striker John Toshack after his move to Leicester City had been aborted for medical reasons but they still had plenty of fire power! In the end the two teams shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw in front of 22,778 fans in Coventry in a game of two halves.

In a thrilling game, the Sky Blues struck first after eighteen minutes when the Reds’ Alec Lindsay fouled Alan Green in the box and City’s Scottish international striker Colin Stein put away the penalty with aplomb.

Then, only three minutes after the break, came the equaliser thanks to a clever back header from the Red’s famous striker Kevin Keegan.

Sky Blues ‘keeper Bill Glazier, fresh from his testimonial, needed to be on top form to keep the Reds out, though it was the Sky Blues’ David Cross that got the ball in the net once, sadly ruled out for off-side.

Gordon’s Sky Blues team that day was:-

Sky Blue Manager Gordon

Bill Glazier, Wilf Smith, Chris Cattlin, Dennis Mortimer, John Craven*, Peter Hindley*, Alan Green, Willie Carr, Colin Stein, David Cross and Tommy Hutchison

All, apart from Peter and John (both sadly since passed away), later became CCFPA members

Bob Paisley‘s Reds lined up:-

Ray Clemence, Tommy Smith, Alec Lindsay, Phil Thompson, Peter Cormack, Emlyn Hughes, Kevin Keegan, Terry McDermott, Steve Heighway, Ray Kennedy and Ian Callaghan Referee:- A.Morrissey (Bramhall)

City lost 2-1 at Anfield in the return later in the season (on 18th January 1975) with a last minute goal from Brian Alderson (also sadly passed away) being our only scorer.

The Reds missed out on the Division One title by just two points from Champions Derby County. City resided in a comfortable fourteenth spot at the end of the season.

For the record the relegated trio this season were (in descending order) Luton Town, Chelsea and bottom, Carlisle United.
