Everton were way off the boil against Newcastle United on Saturday evening in a demoralising 4-1 defeat on home soil.
David Moyes’ men were fresh off the back of a 1-0 win over Manchester United, with two wins and two clean sheets to boot – but they were simply blown away by Newcastle on Saturday, as they trailed by three goals to nil at the break.
Everton were left stunned, unable to climb into the top half of the Premier League after the crushing loss at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
And the 4-1 defeat has opened up a record that David Moyes won’t want to see – with it being the first time he has conceded four as Toffees boss in over a decade.

Everton have not shipped four goals at home for 15 years under David Moyes
Everton have typically been formidable under David Moyes, especially at home, harking back to his first spell as Toffees boss.
But the loss to Newcastle broke a long-streak that the Scot won’t want to see again during his time on Merseyside.
Newcastle scoring four on home soil means it’s the first time that David Moyes has conceded four goals at home as Everton boss in the Premier League for 66 games.
Struggling to think of a worse performance under David Moyes…
MORE EVERTON STORIES
That came in November 2010 against West Bromwich Albion, with a surprise 4-1 defeat to the Baggies. Paul Scharner – a player who always haunts Everton, with five goals in just 14 appearances against the Toffees – put West Brom ahead, before Chris Brunt doubled the lead.
Tim Cahill brought Everton back into it just before half time, though Mikel Arteta’s red card meant Everton had a mountain to climb.
Somen Tchoyi put the Black Country outfit into a 3-1 lead, before Sylvain Distin’s own goal capped a brutal home loss for Moyes.
66 games passed until then, with Everton only conceding three goals in a home game on three separate occasions under Moyes – a 5-3 win over Blackpool in 2010-11, a 3-3 draw with Aston Villa in 2012-13, and October’s 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Newcastle United are proving to be David Moyes’ bogey side
Although Newcastle were the last team to put four past Everton at home, they’ve constantly tormented Moyes over the years.
A 4-3 defeat to the Magpies in March 2024 came after his West Ham side were 3-1 up at St. James’ Park, and a crushing 5-1 home defeat to Eddie Howe in April 2023 was even more damning.
Should Everton extend David Moyes’ deal beyond 2027 or replace him?
Moyes has now only won one of his seven games against Newcastle in recent times, coming in the final day 1-0 win at the end of last season.
Overall, he’s lost 14 of his 36 games against Newcastle but that has ramped up in recent years after their Saudi takeover – and it doesn’t bear any confidence going into the clash on Tyneside later in the season.
In fact, Moyes hasn’t won his last eight home games against Newcastle, so the writing was perhaps on the wall before a ball was kicked.
