West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta was involved in a bizarre red card during the latter stages of Liverpool's 2-0 Premier League win the London Stadium.
The Brazilian, who just returned from suspension this weekend, was frustrated at the decision to give a foul against Niclas Fullkrug, and was shown a yellow card for complaining about the decision by Darren England. At the same time, the home fans were frustrated that Milos Kerkez received on-field treatment.
Ultimately, his remonstrations went over the top. West Ham teammates repeatedly attempted to withdraw him from the situation. Even Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson got involved to try and restrain Paqueta.
The complaints continued for so long, England was left with no alternative but to show a second yellow less than two minutes after the first.
A livid Paqueta sarcastically applauded the referee as he made his way off the pitch, before continuing his protestations with the fourth official, as a glum Nuno Espirito Santo watched on from the sidelines.
"It's completely irresponsible," said Sky Sports commentator Rob Green. "He's lost his head. He's not helped the team in any respect, he's not helped his side in the next eight minutes or his team for the next game.
"West Ham with their passive play have helped Liverpool back on track, and this has helped Liverpool even more."
