'Outstanding': Jamie Carragher left pleasantly surprised by Liverpool star he called a 'nightmare' before West Ham

Liverpool beat West Ham United 2-0 on Sunday, finally ending their terrible run of form in the Premier League.

Alexander Isak drew the ire of fans in the first half at the London Stadium, but quickly silenced the doubters with a first-time finish.

Florian Wirtz was a standout performer on the day, while Cody Gakpo got himself an assist, and Joe Gomez helped shore up what has previously been a shaky backline.

Meanwhile, a couple of Liverpool’s underperformers, while not amazing, did not make any huge mistakes in the West Ham win.

After the harrowing 4-1 defeat to PSV at Anfield, Jamie Carragher was critical of Ibrahima Konate.

He said: “I mean Konate. Listen, it gets to the stage now where you actually feel you shouldn’t criticise him.

“Because you feel, you’re watching something that’s not nice to watch when a player is going through something like this. I never thought he was top class, but he’s going through a nightmare.”

Now, speaking live on Sky Sports right after the fixture, Carragher was quick to mention how both Konate and Kerkez remained mistake-free over the 90 minutes.

He said: “If you keep it really simple about Liverpool today – don’t concede from a set piece, no big mistake at the back from maybe Konate or Kerkez, and one of your summer signings is outstanding.

“If they keep that up in the next few weeks, they could find themselves right in the middle of the Champions League positions. A million miles off the title race, but just to calm everything down Liverpool need to be in those positions.

“If they ever got to a position where that was in real doubt, that would be the time when it would really intensify the pressure on the manager.”

There was a clear Man of the Match…

How Liverpool players feel about Andy Robertson being dropped

Kerkez has struggled a fair bit since arriving at Liverpool over the summer.

Yet, the Hungarian has started in the Reds’ last few matches ahead of Andy Robertson.

Before Sunday’s victory, a report in the Telegraph claimed that the chief complaint among players was Robertson losing his place despite Kerkez not showing he was ready to replace the Scotsman.

But after a decent showing against West Ham, let’s hope their stance is starting to change.
