Liverpool will need to enter the January transfer window to address some the major concerns that have arisen this season

Liverpool have some big issues to address within their squad ahead of the January transfer window - despite spending £450m in the summer.

One big issue the Reds failed to look at was their centre-back options while they also have some ageing players who they need to think about replacing in the long-term.

The club broke their transfer record twice during the summer to sign Florian Wirtz and then Alexander Isak and they are unlikely to spend over £100m in the coming windows but spending t bolster the squad is still likely.

As Liverpool look to navigate a busy December before the January window opens, we have used one of the most popular and realistic simulation tools available - Football Manager 2026. We take a look at what Liverpool’s January transfer business might look like.

Incoming transfers

The simulation from Football Manager predicted three incoming transfers for Liverpool in the winter window. The first two are players they have already been strongly linked with the Reds in Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi.

Semenyo has a £65m release clause in his contract with Bournemouth and could potentially be a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah on the right-wing. Several other clubs are said to be keen on him too.

Another predicted arrival is Guehi - who almost joined Liverpool back in the summer. He does not intend to sign a new contract with Crystal Palace and could be available for a bargain price in January.

The third deal predicted was the £34m arrival of Francisco Trincao of Sporting CP. The 25-year-old has scored 42 goals and provided 38 assists in 173 appearances for Sporting. He plays across the entire frontline and could offer versatility to Arne Slot if a deal was to be done in January.

Outgoing transfers

Not many outgoing deals were completed in the simulation. Young striker Will Wright was sent out on loan to EFL side Cambridge United in order to get more experience of senior football. He joined the club in the summer for around £200,000 from Salford City.

The other exit was Lewis Koumas heading to Aston Villa in a £4.1m deal. The 20-year-old is currently on loan with Birmingham City in the Championship but has been tipped to end that loan early in order to secure a permanent exit.

He has so far just made one senior appearance for the Reds which came in a 3-0 win over Southampton in the fifth round of the FA Cup in February 2024. He scored in that game and has also had a loan spell with Stoke City last campaign.

During the last summer Liverpool sold a number of young stars for big fees and Koumas is another who is predicted to move on after coming through the club’s academy.
