Opinion: Three things learned from Everton's defeat vs Newcastle as controversial Jack Grealish …

Everton were thumped by Newcastle United at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday afternoon in what was a really poor performance.

David Moyes’ side just never got going and went four goals down before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall netted perhaps the goal of the season.

Struggling to think of a worse performance under David Moyes…

Everton were completely outrun by Newcastle, with the visitors covering way more ground despite having more possession.

Moyes would’ve learned a lot about his Everton players yesterday, and with that said, here are three key takeaways from the Hill Dickinson Stadium clash.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has found his form again

There was a point during the season when questions were being asked about Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall after a dull few performances in the number 10 role.

Dewsbury-Hall then came out and said his best position is centre midfield, but Moyes has persisted with him as a number 10.

And now, it’s paying off again as the former Chelsea star looks back to his best, with back-to-back goals against Man United and Newcastle.

Dewsbury-Hall has set himself the aim to get 10 league goals this season; he’s now up to three, so it looks doable.

Everton miss Idrissa Gana Gueye a lot

Yesterday’s game showed us that it’s going to be really difficult to navigate through this festive period without Idrissa Gana Gueye.

Gueye is suspended and will then be jetting off to the Africa Cup of Nations, so he may only play one game from now until the end of January, depending on how Senegal get on.

Moyes suggested that Everton really missed Gueye after the Newcastle game, with Tim Iroegbunam not having his best game.

So, to combat his absence, the Toffees simply have to recall Harrison Armstrong, who can bring similar traits to Moyes’ midfield.

Jack Grealish isn’t doing enough to warrant permanent deal

Everton fans criticised Jack Grealish yesterday, with many making the point that he’s slowing the play down far too often.

Grealish has been pretty underwhelming in recent weeks as he’s only contributed one goal in the last nine games.

Moyes admitted before the Newcastle game that he wants more from the Manchester City loanee.

“I do (think he can reach another level). I would be lying if I said I am completely happy. I want him to score more goals actually,” the Scotsman explained.

At present, Grealish probably isn’t doing enough to warrant a permanent transfer, especially at the £40m buy option.
