Level-headed assessment needed for Nottingham Forest after Brighton defeat

Nottingham Forest's 2-0 defeat against Brighton drew heavy criticism from a vocal minority, but a level-headed assessment is needed at a time when so much is going right for the Reds.

In isolation, the result and most of the performance were poor; there is no denying that.

But that is why you simply cannot assess a game of football in isolation.

Context and circumstances are often bigger factors than the 90 minutes spent on the pitch, and while they do not excuse a sub-par showing, they can go a long way to rationalise it.

One defeat in six games; a run which has included a 3-0 thrashing of the Premier League champions, Liverpool, at Anfield. It is important not to sensationalise this setback.

Losing 2-0 at home a week after tasting victory at Anfield may make it feel more disappointing, but it in no way makes it a worse result.

And while many voice concern about what this result and performance mean for Forest's season, the importance of looking at the bigger picture is key.

Dyche won his first game as Forest boss in style, a 2-0 Europa League win over Porto. Three days later, they were beaten 2-0 at Bournemouth.

After that game, the English boss spoke about the need to get the basics right consistently, to avoid results like that one. Against the Seagulls, many of those basics were missing for parts of the game.

But after the Bournemouth defeat, Forest responded excellently. That response was the five-game unbeaten run, which only ended today, including games against Manchester United and Liverpool.

There is perhaps a cruel irony that it was another south coast team who ended Forest's excellent run, but recent history bodes well for Dyche's side.

Respond like they did last time, and the Reds could find themselves pushing well up the table and, with games against Wolves, Everton and Fulham in their next five, there's every reason to believe a similar run is possible.

In short, there is no point being fearful or critical over what may happen when the signs remain positive, and Forest remain on an upward trajectory, especially when they bounced back from a similar setback just a month ago.

The role of injuries

That is the context that is needed to fully dissect the Brighton defeat, but even that does not tell the full picture.

Injuries have plagued the Forest camp throughout the entirety of Dyche's time at the club so far.

At present, Murillo, Chris Wood, Dilane Bakwa, Douglas Luiz, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Ola Aina are all sidelined, while Morgan Gibbs-White has struggled of late and was substituted with a back issue on Sunday.

With a combined transfer value of more than £200 million, according to Transfermarkt, it is only logical that these absences would take their toll on Forest.

In fact, they make their form under Dyche to date all the more impressive, and thoughts of a not-too-distant future where they are all fit feel utopian.

Dyche hopes to have both Gibbs-White and Murillo ready for Wednesday's trip to Wolves, which should offer a better taste of where Forest are, which is not a bad place at all.

A full injury update, including Gibbs-White and Murillo, among others, will be available on Monday afternoon.
