Opta change Liverpool's chances of Champions League finish after 2-0 win over West Ham

After six defeats from seven, Liverpool picked up a huge Premier League win over West Ham at the weekend.

Alexander Isak opened the scoring for the Reds on the day and spoke of his delight post-match.

Cody Gakpo then killed the game off with a second goal late on, seeing Liverpool secure three points and keep a rare clean sheet.

A step in the right direction for sure, but will it be the start of a much-needed upturn in form that will be needed to catch the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City?

Liverpool’s Premier League finish predicted

Despite losing nine in 12 across all competitions before November 30, the mood at Anfield was still high.

A report emerged claiming that Liverpool expected to finish between first and fifth in the league this season.

Meanwhile, a couple of months ago, the Reds were predicted to win the Premier League for a second campaign in a row.

Right now, though, Opta’s supercomputer doesn’t think that is very likely to happen.

Before West Ham, Liverpool were given a 36.21% chance of securing Champions League football for 2026/27.

Those chances have since increased to 40.45% after Sunday’s result, but any hope of a title challenge seems to have faded.

Opta expect the Merseyside outfit to finish fourth and give them just a 1.40% chance of winning the league.

Slot’s future has been a key talking point in the last week, but the win over the Hammers should quell that conversation for the time being.

Meanwhile, even if the Reds don’t end up in the top four this term, it’s unlikely to have too much of an impact on the football club.

Finance expert Kieran Maguire has previously spoken about Liverpool missing out on Champions League football, suggesting in late October that it’s not a huge problem for them, at least in the short term.

He said: “They’ve got an awful lot of leeway, Liverpool, because FSG run quite a conservative ship, so that they’ve not incurred huge losses.

“So one year out of the Champions League is something which they can deal with easily, two years is imperfect, if it gets to three, then you’ve got a problem, but I think we’re a long way off that.

“The recent expansion of Anfield, the new deal with Adidas, I suspect there will be a renewal of the deal with Standard Chartered as well. They will prime the pump very well as far as the money coming into the club is concerned.

“Champions League participation, it’s desirable but not essential, simply because Liverpool are such a well-run club on other issues that they can survive without it.”
