Alexander Isak finally scored his first Premier League goal since his £130million record transfer from Newcastle United to Liverpool.
At £130million and on the back of a 27-goal season, Isak arrived at Anfield with plenty of expectation. But after a summer without training properly or playing any matches, the 26-year-old has struggled to get up to speed.
It could be argued Isak’s struggles are self-inflicted after he went on strike and refused to train properly during his final months at Newcastle in a bid to force through a move. The Sweden international had scored just once in his opening 10 games for Liverpool with that goal coming in a Carabao Cup win over Championship side Southampton.
But on Sunday, November 30, Isak finally broke his almost six-month wait for a Premier League goal as he opened the scoring for Liverpool in a 2-0 win at West Ham United. It also saw Isak end an unwanted Liverpool record of becoming the first player for the club to lose each of his first four Premier League starts.

Alexander Isak reacts to first Premier League goal for Liverpool
Isak’s strike at the London Stadium was his first Premier League goal since a penalty at Brighton & Hove Albion for Newcastle back in May. It was also his first goal from open play since a strike in a 5-0 win over Crystal Palace for The Magpies in April.
After the win at West Ham, Isak told Sky Sports: "I'm aware that it has been a long time coming, and I have been trying to get back to my best form. I'm still on the way, but I am happy to get that goal. The best feeling today is that we won the game and that is the best way to get a good spirit in the group.
“But, of course, I am a striker, so scoring goals will always help me. We have to use this win in a good way, but also be humble. We have to stay focused and keep working hard to keep this momentum. We knew it was going to be difficult to get back to winning ways after our recent form.
“I'm happy that we won and happy to be on the scoresheet as well. When you are going through tough times as a team, it is about fighting. The boys did really well."
Newcastle United duo congratulate Alexander Isak
Although Isak has become a despised figure amongst Newcastle supporters for his actions over the summer, some players have been more sympathetic to his situation.
Isak had a strong relationship with Joe Willock during his time at Newcastle while 2024 signing William Osula also struck up a friendship with his fellow Scandinavian. The trio had previously shared videos on social media having meals together at Osula’s home.
So when Isak shared an image on Instagram of himself celebrating his first Premier League goal for Liverpool, the Newcastle duo were quick to reply.
Both players posted love heart emojis with Willock commenting: “My boy.”
Osula, who is currently out injured for Newcastle, added: “Let’s go.”
Next up for Liverpool is a home match against Sunderland on Wednesday night. Isak scored a brace in his only previous appearance against The Black Cats in a 3-0 FA Cup third round win for Newcastle back in January 2024.
