“Disastrous season”–Bayern Munich chief on Liverpool problems, and what’s to blame

Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß has said he ‘feels sorry’ for Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz, as covered by Bild.

On Sunday, Hoeneß was speaking to a large audience at the Power Days event in Munich, and Bild have relayed his comments.

He spoke about Wirtz’s struggles at Liverpool and the Reds’ poor run in recent months.

Liverpool have struggled in recent weeks as have registered four wins in their last 13 matches across all competitions. This includes a 2-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday. They are currently eighth in the table, nine points behind leaders Arsenal.

The Bayern Munich representative mentioned what he believes is a key issue for Arne Slot at Liverpool.

“They spent €500m and are having a disastrous season. In my opinion, that’s because they only have superstars. They only have chiefs and no workers. I always say: At Liverpool, they’ll soon have to play with five balls because the stars won’t give up any of them,” he said.

Bayern Munich showed interest in the 22-year-old, but he snubbed them in favour of the Premier League winners in June.

The Germany international is yet to score or contribute an assist in the league after 12 matches. The media in his country has defended him despite the attacking midfielder’s poor form at Anfield.

Two months ago, Bild singled out Mohamed Salah as the reason for Wirtz performing poorly for Liverpool. On November 19th, SportBild said the Egyptian has come a ‘major problem for Wirtz’ and the English champions.

Hoeneß now points out the Liverpool star as one of the reasons for Wirtz’ struggles.

“Poor Florian Wirtz, he doesn’t even get a ball there because Salah and Szoboszlai and all the others want to play with their own,” Hoeneß explained.
