Two Newcastle United players reacted as Alexander Isak bagged his first Premier League goal for Liverpool

The Reds had lost to Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven in their last three games but produced a better display at the London Stadium to claim a deserved win and pick up an important three points.

Isak had a chance to score in the first half but saw his unorthodox finish well saved by Alphonse Areola in the West Ham United goal. The Hammers goalkeeper could do nothing about the striker’s goal, however.

The Swedish international side-footed an accurate first-time finish into the bottom corner from Cody Gakpo’s cut-back - the type of finish typical from his time at Newcastle United and why Liverpool were willing to break their own and the British transfer record to sign him for £125m.

Isak is not a popular figure in Newcastle after he stopped training with the Magpies squad during the summer in order to force through a move to Anfield. His lack of pre-season training has impacted his start to life at Anfield but on Sunday he looked a bit sharper.

He had scored against Southampton in the Carabao Cup and assisted Gakpo as Liverpool lost 2-1 Chelsea earlier in the season.

He took to Instagram after the game and posted a number of photos celebrating his goal and a number of Liverpool stars reacted and commented on the post. However, two players from Newcastle also commented as they reacted to Isak’s goal.

Joe Willock commented “My boy” alongside some love heart emojis while striker Will Osula reacted “Let’s go” as he also accompanied his post with love heart emojis.

Speaking after the game, Isak said: “Yeah of course, I'm aware that it's been a long time coming and I've been trying to get back to my best form. I'm still on the way, but I'm happy to have that goal.

“The best feeling today is that we win the game, that’s the best way to get a good spirit within the group. That’s helpful for the individual as well. Of course I’m a striker, so scoring goals will always help me.”

He added: “We have to use this win in a good way but also be humble, because we’ve had a tough time. One win doesn’t necessarily mean we’re back; we have to stay focused and keep working hard to keep this momentum.”
