Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo almost cost his side in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.
In the 38th minute of the Premier League fixture, Caicedo was dismissed for a poor tackle on Mikel Merino.
Fortunately for the 24-year-old, Chelsea were able to score a goal after Trevoh Chalobah’s header before his victim Merino equalised.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has now discussed Caicedo’s red card and given a very interesting analysis of the player.

Jamie Carragher doesn’t think Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo tackles from the right angle
Carragher is a fan of Caicedo, but he has some concerns about how the Ecuadorian tackles.
Caicedo has quite a high tackle to foul ratio, which Carragher discussed on Sky Sports. According to the former defender, that is down to the angles the Chelsea man comes in from.
“Listen, he’s a brilliant player,” Carragher said. “He wins the ball back fantastically well. But I think he does have a tendency and I’m quite surprised really it’s only his first red card. I remember a challenge I think in the Carabao Cup final on [Ryan] Gravenberch a couple of years ago as well, and I don’t think it’s because he’s so much a nasty player.
“I think at times he can look clumsy and some of the angles he comes in with with the challenge, and that was a case in point really where he ends up facing his own goal to win a challenge when basically he’s got someone else coming behind him and he just doesn’t need to get involved.”
Chelsea will now be without Caicedo for games against Leeds United, Bournemouth and Everton.
For the trip to Elland Road on Wednesday, Enzo Maresca could give Reece James a breather, so that is another key player the Blues may not have available.

Moises Caicedo’s disciplinary record at Chelsea
As Carragher stated, Caicedo certainly is a brilliant player. However, his disciplinary record is something that he is going to have to address.
Being a defensive midfielder, fouls are to be expected. But the former Brighton & Hove Albion man is perhaps committing too many and being cautioned too often as a result.
While his sending off against Arsenal was only his first red card at Chelsea, Caicedo has picked up 35 yellows since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2023, according to Transfermarkt.
Mark Clattenburg’s thoughts on Caicedo’s red card…
Speaking exclusively to The Chelsea Chronicle, the former Premier League referee said:
There is no doubt that Moises Caicedo deserve a red card for a shocking tackle that catches his opponent above the foot which could easily endanger the safety of his opponent. Some will argue that the early yellow cards have created this tension but that is looking for excuses for such a tackle.

If he does not modify his game a bit, you can expect to see more red cards in the future.
With all of that being said, and it comes back to what Carragher mentioned, at times Caicedo is cautioned despite winning back the ball because of the angle the referee has seen.
You can have sympathy for him when he makes challenges like that, but the Arsenal sending off was definitely warranted.
