Ex-Liverpool star namechecks Marc Guehi transfer alternative as Reds weigh up move

Arne Slot has received advice on who could help address Liverpool's defensive struggles. The Reds have historically been lauded in recent years for possessing one of the most formidable defences in world football, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate playing pivotal roles in that success.

Yet this campaign has seen even the Liverpool captain endure difficulties. The Reds shipped seven goals in a matter of days against Nottingham Forest and PSV but did keep a clean sheet at West Ham on Sunday.

Jamie Carragher has already called on the club to invest during the January transfer window, and former Reds goalkeeper Brad Friedel has likewise identified potential reinforcements Slot should pursue to shore up his defence.

Speaking to online slots site talkSPORT BET, he said: "[Alessandro] Bastoni would be my option. But if Liverpool can re-enter the race for Guehi, they absolutely should - he'd be perfect because he already knows the Premier League."

"Buying from abroad always carries the risk that a player takes months to adapt, especially for center-backs. Guehi is already proven in the league, which is why I'd pull out all the stops for him."

Slot held the same view as Friedel during the summer transfer window. Guehi had actually agreed a move to the Premier League champions and was completing his medical when the deal was abruptly called off.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish abandoned the transfer as the FA Cup holders were unable to find a suitable replacement in time. Whilst it proved disappointing for Slot at the time, it now presents an opportunity to sign the 25 year old on a free transfer when his contract runs out in the summer.

Liverpool is also understood to be weighing up an approach for Bastoni. The Inter Milan center-back has become one of Europe's finest defenders, and the Reds are reportedly ready to table a bid of around $116M (£88m), according to Mundo Deportivo.

A January transfer hasn't been dismissed, but a summer move seems more likely. It would represent another costly acquisition for Liverpool, but potentially a crucial one given their current circumstances.

When questioned about whether he needs to overhaul his starting XI, Slot replied: "Is the question should I change dramatically? If, for example, you want another system with five defenders, that could be an issue. I don't even have five defenders.

"It suits the players best, the system we are playing now. They have played this system probably throughout their whole career and there is hardly any training time for us.

"So it is almost impossible to change our complete idea about football if we play every two days."
