Liverpool defender withdraws from England squad through injury

Arne Slot will have breathed a sigh of relief after Liverpool’s battling 2-0 victory at West Ham, a result that not only ended a worrying run of form but also saw his squad emerge unscathed.

The Reds secured their first win in four matches on Sunday, with Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo finding the net, and crucially for Slot, no fresh injuries were added to his already stretched resources.

Milos Kerkez’s late substitution proved to be merely cramp, a minor scare in what was otherwise a clean bill of health for the men’s team.

However, on the Liverpool FC Women’s front the same luck was not granted.

Liverpool FCW defender Grace Fisk had been forced to withdraw from the England squad due to a calf problem picked up in training.

The 27-year-old centre-back, who was appointed Liverpool captain before the season began, had been hoping to earn her first senior England cap in Tuesday’s friendly against Ghana at St Mary’s Stadium.

England head coach Sarina Wiegman confirmed Fisk would miss the fixture, stating:

“She was really enjoying the step-up, and unfortunately, she has picked up this small injury. That is disappointing for her, but that’s the way it is.”

“I think it’s good that she went through the whole week and she had that opportunity at least.”

“I just hope she gets fit really quickly and is available for Liverpool soon.”

The timing compounds Fisk’s frustration, as Wiegman had planned to rotate her squad following Saturday’s 8-0 demolition of China, presenting a clear opportunity for debutants.

Instead, Fisk returns to Merseyside to begin rehabilitation, with Liverpool manager Gareth Taylor hoping she will be available for the WSL clash against Arsenal on December 6th.

The women’s side has been particularly devastated by ACL injuries, with Sophie Roman Haug and Marie Hobinger both suffering season-ending ruptures in recent weeks.
