Despite being shorthanded and on the second night of a back-to-back, the Boston Celtics picked up an upset 117-115 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night. Per usual, Jaylen Brown played a major role in this win, just not in the way we have become accustomed to seeing from him. With Jayson Tatum still recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, Brown has taken his game to another level this season, as he’s averaging a career-high 28.4 points per game through his first 20 contests. Against the Cavs, though, Brown recorded the fourth triple-double of his career, scoring 19 points, hauling in 12 rebounds and dishing out 11 assists. Brown’s all-around game was a welcome sight, as he hit just three of his 13 shots from the field. Along the way, though, Brown’s scoring efforts saw him join an exclusive club of Celtics greats, as he became just the 14th player in franchise history to score 12,000 points for the team. Brown has been consistently excellent throughout his career with the C’s, but he’s almost always had someone he could defer to on offense when needed. That isn’t the case right now, and Brown has proven that he can be one of the most efficient scorers in the league when he needs to be. Considering how he has a championship ring and a Finals MVP Award to his name, Brown’s legacy was already secure, but he’s putting himself in some truly elite company with the franchise’s all-time greats. Brown’s continued strong play has helped the Celtics exceed expectations early in the season, as they now have an 11-9 record through 20 games.
