Slot's genius change vs West Ham allowed ‘crazy’ Liverpool star to have his best game yet - opinion

Arne Slot was under pressure heading into the West Ham game, but he got it spot on.

Liverpool have not had the start to the season that anyone would have expected, with the Reds on a run of nine losses in 12 games before this weekend.

Change was needed and change is exactly what Slot did, with the Dutchman going bold in his team selection in order to turn things around.

It worked to good effect too as the Reds were dominant throughout and individual stars had their best games in a Liverpool shirt to date.

But there was one in particular who was impacted due to a change Slot made elsewhere, but it proved to help him out massively.

One of Liverpool’s biggest weaknesses so far this season has been their defence and how many goals they are conceding.

So against the Hammers, Slot made a slightly more defensive change that helped enormously, with this being bringing Joe Gomez in at right-back.

The Englishman knew when to go forward but equally when to stay back, and also tucked in regularly when the ball was on the left side of the pitch.

This enabled Milos Kerkez to bomb forward down this flank and flex his attacking muscles, with the Hungarian far more dangerous in this game compared to previous ones.

He also looked more comfortable defensively too, with this certainly his best game since joining Liverpool from Bournemouth in the summer.

It would be no surprise to see Slot opt for the same backline against Sunderland given how comfortable they were as well, although the Black Cats might prove a much trickier test.

Milos Kerkez is slowly getting back to his best

When he first came in, Kerkez looked to be a nightmare of a signing as he was nowhere near the level he showed last season and was a little ‘crazy’ in the way he played.

However, week by week, he has slowly looked more reassured, with his last outing the best of the lot.

Is this Arne Slot’s best Liverpool XI moving forward?

The fact Liverpool have Andy Robertson also means he is constantly being pushed to be his best, something he will need to ensure he keeps working hard.

With fixtures coming thick and fast, he might be rotated more than he would like, but as long as he keeps it up, he will be the first choice more often than not.
