Pistons guard moves closer to season debut, adding another challenge to rotation

The Detroit Pistons may be close to adding back the only player on the roster who has yet to make their season debut.

Guard Marcus Sasser has been sidelined since preseason due to a right hip impingement, but the Pistons announced on Sunday the former first-round pick has been assigned to the Motor City Cruise, the team’s G League Affiliate.

The move signals Sasser is nearing a return as he’ll join the Cruise to scrimmage with the team and get back into playing shape.

Guard Jaden Ivey did the same before returning to the court from a pair of injuries that delayed his season debut.

Sasser played in two preseason games before getting sidelined due to the hip injury. His status continued to get kicked down the road until the Pistons finally [announced on Nov. 8 he would remain out](https://www.mlive.com/pistons/2025/11/injured-pistons-guard-receives-unfortunate-medical-update.html) to continue his rehab and be re-evaluated in approximately four weeks.

It now looks like the 25-year-old is nearing a debut for his third season in the NBA.

Sasser earned a steady role off the bench as a backup point guard over the past two seasons, averaging 7.5 points, 2.9 assists and 1.5 rebounds over his 128 total games.

His looming return does offer up some complications to the Pistons’ already expansive rotation.

Coach J.B. Bickerstaff has already been [managing a 12-man rotation](https://www.mlive.com/pistons/2025/11/the-good-problem-first-place-pistons-jb-bickerstaff-have-on-their-hands.html) for the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference. Adding another player to the group will require a further balancing act for Bickerstaff as Caris LeVert and Daniss Jenkins have emerged as the primary backup ball handlers behind Cade Cunningham.

Bickerstaff has pledged to give minutes to those players that have earned opportunities, but there’s only so many to go around as the Pistons try to stack further on their 16-4 record.
