Everything you need to know about Harvey Elliott's future, with a potential return to Liverpool on the cards and speculation about his next move after a difficult stint at Aston Villa....
Manager's verdict: Unai Emery has openly stated that Elliott's limited game time is mainly due to stiff competition from other players who are in top form. This implies that the decision is based on current performance and team balance, although there are rumours that the club may be intentionally avoiding activating a certain clause.
Other clubs' interest: According to the Mirror, West Ham and RB Leipzig want to stay updated on Elliott's uncertain future. The Liverpool midfielder caught the eye of the Hammers last summer, while Leipzig nearly secured his signature.
Contract agreement: Elliott had agreed terms on a four-year contract with the Bundesliga side, where his former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is now head of global football. However, they couldn't agree on a transfer fee with the Reds.
What's next: Both West Ham and Leipzig view the 22 year old as a potential target for next summer. There could also be renewed interest from Brighton and Nottingham Forest, among others, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Loan deal and possible return: Villa secured him on loan until the end of the season on deadline day, but insiders suggest he could return to Anfield in January if all parties consent. Villa's obligation to purchase Elliott next summer for £35million depends on him making a certain number of appearances, believed to be 10.
Villa's financial constraints: Given Villa's obligation to comply with UEFA's Profit and Sustainability Regulations, it is seen as a financially sensible decision to avoid splashing out on a peripheral player. Consequently, it would be illogical for Liverpool to insist he remains at Villa Park and not agree to a return.
FIFA regulations: He has turned out for two clubs this season. According to FIFA rules, if he were to play for a third, it would have to be an overseas club whose season overlaps with that of the Premier League, like the MLS.
