Premier League officials could be in hot water over ‘crucial’ mistake against Leeds United –…

Leeds United Manchester City

Leeds United left the Etihad with a defeat on Saturday afternoon, but the aftermath left Daniel Farke furious with what happened in the game. His side felt they should have at least gotten a result but unfortunately, things did not go their way.

The major talking point came in the second half; with the Whites growing into the game following Calvert-Lewin pulling one goal back just four minutes into the second period. Leeds started to control the game, and had the home side on the backfoot. The half time change saw Farke bring another striker up top, and the City defensive line found it hard to deal with them.

With the pressure mounting, there was a break in the game as City keeper Donnarumma went down with an injury. This paused the game, and allowed Pep Guardiola to have a team talk on the touchline. After the game, Farke accused the home side of bending the rules, accusing Donnarumma of deliberately faking the injury to delay the game when his side was under pressure.

Officials make huge error in Leeds United vs Manchester City game

It has now been revealed after the match that, there was a huge error just before City’s second goal of the game. Phil Foden was offside, when he got the ball and had his effort saved by Lucas Perri which went behind for a corner. Josko Gvardiol eventually scored, doubling the lead from the home side.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher, who saw the incident, said that there was ‘no doubt’ that Foden should have been flagged offside.

“I think it’s really interesting,” Gallagher told Sky Sports’ Ref Watch.

“If you watch, when the corner is taken by Foden the assistant is forced to move upfield.

“If you watch it, he moves up to go level with the last defender and Foden is on his right-hand side, he doesn’t see him.

“When Gvardiol heads the ball first time, it goes back to Foden, who is in an offside position. He takes the ball, gets struck and goes for a corner.

“Because it doesn’t go in the net, VAR can’t intervene. He’s just lost him because he’s taken his position with the defender.”

Everything went against Leeds on Saturday

Daniel Farke and his side have every right to be aggrieved after what happened in the match. If the officials got it right, the home side should never have had a second goal, which put them in pole position to win the match.

The Donnarumma incident was also controversial as it stalled the match in a crucial part of the game where Leeds were mounting pressure. Gallagher is right that the Foden incident could not be ruled out by VAR, but the referees need to come out and admit they made an error in the game.
