FC Barcelona have taken the first formal steps to sign 17-year-old Al Ahly and Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim.
Regarded as one of the top attacking talents in African football, Hamza Abdelkarim has caught the attention of several European clubs. But it appears, however, that Barcelona have made their interest official and began exploratory talks over a potential move according to Catalonia-based journalist, Achraf Ben Ayad.
The young forward, who plays as a striker, has already made two senior appearances for Al Ahly, one in the Egyptian Premier League and another in the CAF Champions League.
Internationally, Abdelkarim has been prolific for Egypt’s U-17 side, scoring 12 goals in 19 appearances, including two at the recent FIFA U-17 World Cup.
While Barcelona are convinced of the teenager’s potential and are pushing to secure his signature, they are not alone in the race. Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also reportedly monitoring Abdelkarim’s progress closely.
However, Barcelona’s recent track record in nurturing young talent could work in their favour as they look to outpace their rivals in the race to sign one of Egypt’s most promising exports.
