Liverpool continue to find themselves linked with potential new managerial signings to replace Arne Slot

Liverpool’s win over West Ham at the weekend has broken another disappointing run of defeats but the pressure is still weighing heavy on both the team and the manager.

Arne Slot remains a hot topic of conversation among fans, neutrals and professionals alike as we enter the final weeks of 2025. Liverpool have lost nine of their last 13 games in all competitions and have a lot of ground to make up in the Premier League if they want to reignite their title defence.

Their 4-1 defeat to PSV in the Champions League also puts them outside of the top eight, meaning they will need to chance their luck in the play-offs if results don’t improve.

Tensions remain high in and around Liverpool, with the world watching closely to see if Slot can turn this season around. The Dutchman is experiencing a dramatic fall from grace, having guided the Reds to the Premier League title in his maiden season, to now yo-yoing in and out of the top ten.

Will Liverpool sack Arne Slot?

If Liverpool’s results can significantly improve and they finish the season in respectable position, it’s likely everyone will just look to forget about this nightmare start to the campaign.

However, he is far from out of the woods just yet, as Liverpool have a lot of ground to make up in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Reports have suggested that the pressure is certainly building at Anfield but the club aren’t hovering over the trigger just yet.

With Slot’s poor run of for acknowledged, Jurgen Klopp had emerged as the leading favourite to potentially replace his successor. German media recently claimed the Reds would be ‘negligent’ to not at least approach Klopp and ask if he would return to Merseyside.

The manager himself also admitted it was ‘theoretically’ possible that he would return to Liverpool one day but the chances of him actually reclaiming his role as manager are slim. The Telegraph has firmly acknowledged that Klopp will not be coming back to Liverpool, which leaves the team to either stick it out with Slot, or turn their attention elsewhere.

Potential Arne Slot replacement is now obvious

Liverpool had eyed their former midfielder up to replace Klopp last year but the Spaniard opted to stay with Bayer Leverkusen to enjoy the fruits of his success. He then moved to another former club in Real Madrid, but things are reportedly not as harmonious as he would like in the Spanish capital.

According to El Partidazo de COPE (via Mundo Deportivo), high profile members of Madrid are ‘split’ over who does and doesn’t support the former midfielder as manager.

With a divide at Madrid, this could be the perfect chance for Alonso to explore another challenge. The issues in Spain are reportedly down to the manager implementing ‘strict rules’ to eliminate ‘bad habits’, and has insisted that each player must fight for their place in the starting lineup, regardless of how established they are.

This is an approach Liverpool would benefit from, as multiple players have performed below their usual standard this season, to little repercussions.

Alonso would also be reunited with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, who he previously managed at Leverkusen. Against the odds, Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen lifted the Bundesliga trophy in a stunning unbeaten season, snubbing Bayern Munich of a 12th consecutive league title.
