Why Chelsea are set to receive a phone call from Borussia Dortmund about Aaron Anselmino

Chelsea will be pleased with how Aaron Anselmino’s development is going at Borussia Dortmund.

Anselmino recently scored his first goal for Dortmund in their 2-1 win against Bayer Leverkusen and also starred in their 4-0 Champions League victory over Villarreal.

Niko Kovac was really impressed with Anselmino’s performance in the defeat of Leverkusen at the weekend, hailing him as a “true professional”.

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl hints at signing Aaron Anselmino permanently

Chelsea could soon have to decide whether to sell Anselmino to Dortmund or not, with the German club’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl hinting at a permanent transfer.

Kehl was asked about potentially buying the defender and told reporters he would speak to Chelsea on the phone in the coming days to enquire about it.

Speaking to Ruhr Nachrichten, Kehl said: “I’ll certainly have to pick up the phone over the next few days and give them a call. We have a very good relationship with Chelsea FC.”

Right now, Enzo Maresca will be happy with his centre-back options, including Trevoh Chalobah.

Chalobah scored against Arsenal on Sunday and has been a key player for Maresca this season. If Anselmino is to return to Chelsea next summer, it is likely that Chalobah or another centre-back will have to leave the club.

Chelsea shouldn’t sell Aaron Anselmino yet

Chelsea currently have a lot of centre-halves in their squad and will have another one available to them once Levi Colwill returns from his ACL injury. Even so, the club should not be in a hurry to sell Anselmino.

Anselmino is starting to look like a real gem at Dortmund, performing for such a big club and in the Champions League.

Ultimately, with the way that he is progressing in Germany, he could be ready for the Chelsea first team next season.

Keeping the Argentine around for a bit longer and perhaps sending him on another loan or two before making a decision on his long-term future may make more sense for the Blues.
