Liverpool ended their losing run at the weekend by beating ten-man West Ham and now look to build on that result against a Sunderland side sitting above them in the Premier League table.
Arne Slot’s team badly needed a response after three successive heavy defeats, and they got it at the London Stadium.
Alexander Isak finally opened his Premier League account for the club despite another quiet display, before Cody Gakpo secured a 2-0 win.
The victory followed back-to-back 3-0 losses and a 4-1 home defeat to PSV.
Liverpool remain nine points behind leaders Arsenal and sit eighth, one point and two places below Sunderland.
Sunderland had gone three games without a win but did draw with Everton and Arsenal during that run.
That form looked set to continue on Saturday when they fell 2-0 behind to Bournemouth, only for a remarkable comeback to seal a 3-2 victory at the Stadium of Light and lift them back to sixth.
Slot’s side have already lost four home matches this season, including their last two at Anfield, conceding seven goals and scoring just once.
Sunderland, meanwhile, have lost only one of their past six league fixtures but have taken just five points from their last four.
Regis Le Bris’ side have conceded five goals in their last four outings, and Liverpool will hope to exploit that defensive vulnerability.
However, the Reds’ clean sheet against West Ham was their first in four matches, having conceded 10 goals across that spell.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League meetings with Sunderland (W6, D4), a run stretching back to a 1-0 defeat in March 2012.
Their most recent clash was a 2-2 draw in January 2017.
Sunderland are also winless in their last 18 league visits to Anfield (D9, L9), with their last victory there coming in October 1983.
