Liverpool’s latest transfer interest could push this Anfield star out the door next year
The clock may be ticking for a certain Liverpool player as the club look to bring in a new recruit in his position.
The Reds are working their way through a tricky season right now and the January transfer window will likely present new opportunities for new signings. Arne Slot is in need of new defensive options to bolster his backline, while another defensive midfielder could also be on the cards.
Liverpool are looking to bring in a figure similar to Fabinho, who many would argue they are still yet to replace. After the Brazilian left the club in 2023 for Saudi Arabia, the Reds struggled to sign a like-for-like replacement.
During that window, the Reds missed out on key transfer targets Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo, who both signed for Chelsea. Liverpool eventually brought in Wataru Endo, but it never looked like he was a permanent solution for their defensive midfield needs.
Wataru Endo’s time at Liverpool is coming to an end
While Liverpool search for a new No.6, it only continues to push Endo out of the picture. The Japanese international was a regular figure under Jurgen Klopp but opportunities have been hard to come by under Slot.
Endo has made just seven appearances in all competitions so far this season and his time on the pitch in the Premier League has been limited to a mere 36 minutes since the campaign started.
Despite being a solid asset for the Reds, his chances are rapidly fading and if Liverpool sign a new midfielder, Endo will only further retreat into the shadows.
Ahead of this season, Endo said he would be staying at the club but with opportunities even more limited than last season, 2026 may be the time he decides to move elsewhere for a better shot at regular football.
Despite his limited chances in red, Endo stressed earlier this year that he has been feeling the support from the Liverpool fans.
“This season, when I play on the pitch, the Liverpool fans always try to support me and they always comment on my Instagram or X,” he said. “So, I really feel like they support me. I think the fans love me.”
Slot is also an admirer of Endo, despite him not really fitting his current plans. The Dutchman lauded the midfielder as a ‘special’ player who has continued to give his all, despite not being a regular name on the teamsheet.
“I appreciate him a lot as a football player but also as a human being,” the manager said last season. “Because no matter how many minutes the team needs him [for], he always shows up.”
Liverpool have their eye on new defensive midfielder
Not only is Endo struggling to compete with his current teammates, there could be another face among the midfielders next year. Liverpool are said to be keen on Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, who would bring a wealth of experience plus versatility to the club.
Slot is on the market for new midfield options, with a strong No.6 high up on the priority list. According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are once again linked with Real Madrid, as Camavinga has become one of their ‘key targets’ ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.
The Reds are reportedly ‘expected’ to submit an offer of €60 million (£53m) in attempt to sign the Real Madrid midfielder.
Slot has ‘identified’ Camavinga as a priority transfer target to strengthen his midfield. E-Noticies has also reported that the Premier League champions are exploring the market for new midfielders, as Liverpool are ‘desperately’ searching for a ‘physical and dominant’ figure like Camavinga.
