Alexander Isak 'doesn't even smile when he scores' as World Cup winners weigh into debate
Alexander Isak scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool in their 2-0 win against West Ham United, breaking a 310-minute league goal drought.
The Swedish striker moved to Liverpool from Newcastle United for a British record £125 million fee on transfer deadline day.
Isak admitted his first Premier League goal for the Reds was a "long time coming" and acknowledged he is "still on the way" back to his best form after struggling with fitness.
Former Newcastle captain Alan Shearer praised the goal, calling the half-volley finish "class" and a "fantastic finish" that provided the quality Liverpool needed.
Shearer stated that his previous criticism of Isak's contentious transfer away from Newcastle—which he called a "messy situation"—is now "gone."
Shearer also suggested that for Liverpool to get the best out of Isak, they need to adapt their play style and deliver the ball into him earlier to complement his spontaneous approach.
Despite scoring, World Cup winner and former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf heavily criticized Isak's overall performance against West Ham, describing his display for the first hour as "appalling."
Leboeuf expressed sympathy for Liverpool teammate Hugo Ekitike, arguing that Ekitike’s performances are superior despite having a lower price tag, and felt Isak's substitution was "only fair to Ekitike."
Isak’s teammate Alexis Mac Allister said: “I am really happy for him. I think he's an amazing player, we all know that. I was joking with him because he doesn't even smile when he scores!"
Liverpool legend John Aldridge believes that after Erling Haaland, Isak is the most natural finisher in the Premier League - he just needs to believe in himself
Newcastle supporters, for one night only, will be Isak fans when Liverpool take on Sunderland on Wednesday
