Liverpool have a couple of players walking a suspension tightrope ahead of the busy festive period

The Reds got back to winning ways against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon as Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo scored second-half goals to help end a three-game losing streak.

They are now nine points behind leaders Arsenal, who drew 1-1 with Chelsea on Sunday at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool need to put together a big winning run if they want any chance of retaining the Premier League - with their chances incredibly slim at this point.

Another player who has already played a big role this campaign is midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. After the Reds’ 1-0 win over Real Madrid in early November, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher held a post-match interview with Szoboszlai and introduced him as ‘Liverpool’s best player this season’ ahead of asking questions to the Hungarian.

“You as an individual have been absolutely fantastic and I think your level has gone up each season, and it feels like you’re one of the first names on the team sheet,” Carragher added.

The last thing that Slot will want is to lose the midfielder for any length of time but the Hungarian is walking a suspension tightrope and could miss this weekend’s clash with Leeds United.

He has picked up four yellow cards already and if he is booked again before Liverpool’s 20th game of the season he will be handed a one-game ban. Premier League rules state that any player who is booked five times in the first 19 games will be handed a one-match suspension for the following game.

Sunderland have been in strong form this campaign and will give a stern test to the Reds but Szoboszlai especially will need to remain on the right side of the referee to avoid being booked and missing the trip to Leeds United.

Defender Conor Bradley is also on four yellow cards but is currently out injured. He might not return before Liverpool’s 19th Premier League game but will need to avoid a yellow card if he does play within the next six league matches.
