Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk lost out on $2,000 as a result of a flop during Sunday night’s loss to the visiting Memphis Grizzlies.
In 2012-13, the NBA implemented the ability to assess fines to players for flopping. I’m not going to advocate for players to lose out on more money, but there are unquestionably more instances that (seem to) fit the criteria of flopping but are never met with fines.
Well, the league offices determined that Monk’s flop while making contact with Zach Edey warranted a $2,000 fine. During the game, it actually worked out in Sacramento’s favor as veteran official Scott Foster called an offensive foul on Edey.
Definitely a flop from Malik, but curious as to how they determine what is and isn’t worthy of a fine. https://t.co/I5gBukzi5y pic.twitter.com/XEmztExFoK

As you can see in the above clip, it’s clearly a flop from Monk. There’s no arguing that.
For a moment, it caused concern about how he crashed into the knee of his teammate, Zach LaVine. But everyone got up from the collision and played on.
Monk did sit out Monday’s practice with shoulder soreness. It’s unclear whether it was caused by that moment. LaVine was a full participant.
The lasting result is a Memphis turnover and a $2,000 fine for Monk.
If there were further violations by Monk, the fines would continue to increase. After a certain point, suspension would be considered as well, but it’d be surprising if the Kings guard ever reached that point.

Anyone who keeps up with the NBA knows who Russell Westbrook is. Currently in his 18th season, Westbrook (37) has earned an MVP award, nine All-Star and All-NBA appearances, and is a two-time scoring champ and three-time assist champ.
With the most triple-doubles in NBA history, including four seasons of averaging a triple-double, he was an obvious selection for the 75th anniversary team as well. Now playing for the Sacramento Kings, his teammates are well aware of his impressive history.
Rookie Nique Clifford said his new teammate was one of his favorite players growing up. The veteran point guard didn’t officially join Sacramento’s roster until after training camp, giving him little time to acclimate to his new squad.
